What You Need to Know:

  • Schultz finished 3rd among TEs in PPR points last season; 5th in points per game (0.1 ahead of Darren Waller).
  • That followed a TE10 finish in PPR in 2020, though he ranked just 16th in points per game among TEs who reached 20 targets.
  • Schultz ranked 6th among TEs in targets last season but tied for just 13th at the position in target share.
  • Dallas passed (sacks included) on 59% of offensive snaps last season, down slightly vs. 2020 but up vs. any other season with Dak Prescott as the most frequent starter.
  • Schultz ranked 6th at the position in receiving yards, but just 26th in yards after catch per reception (among TEs with 20+ catches). He also ranked 13th at the position in average target depth. That combo highlights how much target volume drove his yardage.
  • Schultz tied for 10th among TEs in catch rate, though he caught more passes than any TE ahead of him on that list.
  • The Cowboys shed 25.5% target share from last year’s offense by trading Amari Cooper and letting Cedrick Wilson leave in free agency.
  • Michael Gallup returns after losing 8 games to injury last season, but he’s also coming off a Jan. 2 ACL tear.
  • Dallas drafted WR Jalen Tolbert in Round 3 and TE Jake Ferguson in Round 4. Ferguson caught 145 passes across 4 starting seasons at Wisconsin. He ranked 2nd on the team in receptions, receiving yards and TD catches as a 2018 freshman.
  • The Cowboys applied the franchise tag to keep Schultz from reaching free agency.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

The Cowboys clearly love Schultz. If they didn’t, they could have let him test the market – especially in an offseason that found the team cap-strapped enough that it traded Amari Cooper for minimal return. Schultz remains in a good situation for target upside, with unproven new guys taking the spots of more tested veterans. We’re betting his fantasy totals dip vs. last season, but there’s no arguing that he presents an attractive PPR ceiling.

Dalton Schultz (knee) expected to play vs. Bears

The Cowboys expect TE Dalton Schultz (knee) to play through his "questionable" designation today against the Bears. There's some risk to Schultz after he spent the entire practice week limited -- compared with full practices leading up to last Sunday's game against the Lions. But he should be available for fantasy football lineups.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz (knee) was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Bears. He tweaked that knee again last weekend but was able to return to that game. We’re expecting Schultz to play on Sunday, but he won’t be at 100%.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz aggravated the PCL sprain in his left knee in Sunday's win over the Lions. But NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Schultz said after that he's "fine." Schultz did re-enter the game. He wound up running the 4th most routes among Cowboys and ranking 3rd in targets. We'll watch his status leading up to a Week 8 meeting with the Bears. Dallas gets its bye in Week 9.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz (knee) was a full-go in practice all week and isn’t listed on the final injury report. It’s a strange situation after Schultz was a late scratch for last Sunday night’s game vs. the Eagles. But the injury report suggests that he’s ready for his usual role against the Lions this weekend. Consider Schultz a risk/reward Week 7 fantasy play.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz (knee) was listed as a full participant in Wednesday's practice. He was a surprise inactive this past Sunday night but is evidently on track to play vs. the Lions this weekend. Schultz should get QB Dak Prescott back for that one, but we'd like to see him make it through a game healthy before getting him back in fantasy lineups.
