What You Need to Know:

  • Despite groin, foot and back injuries, Mooney played all 17 games in 2021.
  • Mooney ranked 11th among WRs in targets (140) but just 19th in catches (81) and 17th in receiving yards (1,055). He added only 4 TDs.
  • Mooney finished as a top-24 WR in 8 of 17 games. He finished as a top-12 WR 4 times.
  • He averaged just 3.4 catches, 48.8 yards and .22 TDs in 9 full games alongside Justin Fields.
  • Overall, Mooney ranked just 27th among 37 WRs with 100+ targets in yards per route run; 26th in PFF receiving grade.
  • Mooney’s target competition diminished following the loss of Allen Robinson. Rookie Velus Jones, Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown are the current contenders for the #2 WR role.
  • To reach his ceiling, Mooney will need improvement from Justin Fields, who ranked 29th among 33 qualifiers in on-target rate.
  • Fields at least fits Mooney’s deep speed as a risk-taking long-range thrower. Last year, among 33 QBs with 250+ dropbacks, only Russell Wilson beat Fields in average depth of target.
  • The Bears swapped out failed HC Matt Nagy for Matt Eberflus and former Packers QB coach Luke Getsy.
  • Look for RPOs and more play-action passing. Overall, the move projects as an upgrade, although we might see some early growing pains in the new system.
  • Through 2 seasons, Mooney’s posted just a 5.6% TD rate. At only 5’10, 176 pounds, he probably won’t pop in the scoring category.
  • Conditioning has been an offseason “point of emphasis” for Bears WR Darnell Mooney, per Dan Pompei of The Athletic. “I knew I was fatigued a little bit, but my mindset was not coming out of the game.” Mooney also gained about 10 pounds this offseason after playing the past 2 years in the low 170s.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

A 2020 Round 5 pick, Mooney’s quickly out-produced his draft stock.

Playing in all 33 games over the past 2 seasons, Mooney really broke out in ’21 with a WR24 PPR finish.

You could argue that boosted volume got him there. And it did.

But the 2022 Bears are setup to give Mooney another massive workload. If Justin Fields can take a step forward with a new and improved coaching staff, Mooney will be positioned for another WR2/WR3 season.

Allen Robinson off COVID list

Bears WR Allen Robinson has been activated from the COVID list. He figures to siphon a few targets from WR Darnell Mooney and TE Cole Kmet this weekend, but A-Rob isn't a fantasy option vs. the Giants.

Bears WR Allen Robinson has been placed on the COVID list. He'll likely miss Monday night's game vs. the Vikings. Robinson, of course, has been a major disappointment this season and shouldn't have been in your Week 15 fantasy plans. His absence is a slight upgrade for WR Darnell Mooney and TE Cole Kmet.

Bears WR Allen Robinson (hamstring) is doubtful for Sunday's game vs. the Cardinals. WR Marquise Goodwin (foot) has been ruled out, leaving Damiere Byrd, Jakeem Grant and Isaiah Coulter behind Darnell Mooney. Mooney has racked up 24 targets over the past 2 weeks and is a strong volume bet again on Sunday.

Bears WR Allen Robinson (hamstring) remained sidelined for Wednesday's practice. He hasn't hit the practice field since Chicago came out of the Week 10 bye. WR Darnell Mooney will continue to dominate targets if Robinson misses Sunday's game vs. the Cardinals.

The Bears list WR Allen Robinson (hamstring) as doubtful for Thursday's game vs. the Lions. He didn't practice all week and won't play tomorrow. That leaves Darnell Mooney as Chicago's #1 WR and a nice fantasy starter. Marquise Goodwin will be the #2 WR and is in play for DFS tournaments.
