Cardinals QB Carson Beck started the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night and had an excellent performance. He went 15 of 19 for 188 passing yards and a TD. The TD came on a corner route to WR Simi Fehoko, perfectly placed on the sideline, showcasing Beck’s accuracy and live arm. It’s just one preseason game against likely backups and practice squad players, but it is a good sign for the young QB.

But you'd much rather see it unfold like this than see him throw an interception, take a couple of sacks, and look indecisive before and after the snap. Instead, Beck, whose big-time-throw rate hovered around 3% in college, was slinging it early on Thursday night.”
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Strong Debut, Weak Redraft Path
The TD pass wasn’t Beck’s only impressive throw. He had another great deep throw to WR Jalen Brooks in the first quarter that connected between three Panthers defenders. Beck placed the ball a bit behind Brooks to keep the safety in front from making a play.
Even better on that play was Beck actually going through his progressions. He pump faked to his first read before moving to Brooks and making the pass. Beck’s college film was littered with first-read passes that were ill-advised. That appeared to be a focus in this game.
Brooks was a favorite target. In the second quarter, Beck hit him deep after Brooks got separation from the CB, although the throw drifted a bit too far inside and got Brooks absolutely crushed by the incoming Safety.
That may draw a mixed review from his coaches. Even so, a 50-yard completion in your NFL debut is a great start.
Beck’s work through his progressions, along with arm strength that looked sharper than it did late in college, makes this a performance worth noting.
Even with one stand out performance in preseason, Beck isn’t a redraft candidate. Don’t count on him in 2026, though he could end up being a waiver addition if the Cardinals coaching staff decides to bench Jacoby Brissett at some point this season. We currently rank Beck as QB35 in our QB Rankings.
But Does It Matter?
A sharp preseason debut is obviously better than an indecisive, turnover-filled one. The harder question is how much a strong first preseason game from a rookie QB actually matters, and the results there are mixed.
We have seen future franchise QBs come out of the gate hot. Most notably, Dak Prescott had a standout performance in his preseason opener, going 10 of 12 for 139 yards and 2 TDs. Baker Mayfield is another who looked sharp in his first preseason game (212 yards and 2 TDs).
We've also seen future busts look amazing in their debuts. Justin Fields went 14 of 20 for 142 yards with a TD, plus 33 yards and another score on the ground. Kenny Pickett, who Beck faced off against last night, went 13 of 15 for 95 yards and 2 TDs and capped his preseason debut with a game-winning drive.
Bad preseason debuts aren't career killers either. Jared Goff completed just 44.4% of his passes with 1 INT in his preseason opener. C.J. Stroud had 13 yards and an INT himself, though perhaps we should have seen busts like Josh Rosen and Matt Corral coming after awful preseason performances.
Coaches handle preseason games for their rookie QBs differently and it can differ from drive to drive even. Some will overload their rookie QBs and try a full offensive install to see where they are mentally. Some will take baby steps to build confidence and grow development.
The same goes for the defensive side, where coverages can be very vanilla or overly complex, making miscues inevitable.
Take Beck's performance with a grain of salt, but it's still a promising start worth tracking throughout camp and the rest of the preseason.
Dynasty Impact: Useful Window, Shaky Future
Dynasty certainly is the format to roster Beck, especially in superflex leagues. He should gain some starts this season (when the Cardinals are out of the playoff race) and could even help a contending team with QB injuries late in the season.
The supporting cast gives Beck a path to QB2 production when he does debut, especially if he keeps playing as effectively as he did in the Hall of Fame Game.
Beck's biggest hurdle is longevity. If the Cardinals are bad enough to start him, they could also be bad enough to draft a new QB in the first round of the 2027 draft. Beck's play could change that thinking, but his value could also completely fall off after this season.
Now likely isn't the time to trade for him, but keep an eye on our Trade Value Chart in case his value rises throughout the preseason.
In a 1-QB dynasty league, Beck could be worth adding if your roster is deep enough. You'd likely have to stash him for most of the season, but a few productive starts could let you dish him for a late 2027 rookie pick.
