Rest Of Way Outlook

Week 12
Injuries moved Wilson up to the No. 3 WR in the Cowboys’ lineup, and he responded with 7 catches and team highs of 10 targets and 104 yards that included a 51-yard gain in the 2nd quarter. It was his 2nd career 100-yard game. About the time in the 4th quarter when the press box audio announced that Wilson was questionable to return because of a right ankle injury, he was back on the field catching a pass.
Wilson didn’t practice Monday or Tuesday because of the ankle injury. With WR Amari Cooper’s availability in question while he has lingering effects from Covid-19, Wilson again could be an important part of the Dallas passing game. Check the injury report, keeping in mind that the Cowboys are playing on Thursday again this week.
Week 11
Next man up after next man up means that Wilson could have a starting role along with WR Michael Gallup. After some cameo roles earlier in the season, Wilson caught 4 of 7 targets for 36 yards with 1 drop. His ability wasn’t recognized much at Kansas City, where QB Dak Prescott wasn’t throwing deep.
The Cowboys may be out of starting deep threats against the Raiders on Thursday. WRs Amari Cooper (unvaccinated and testing positive for Covid-19) will not play and CeeDee Lamb (concussion) isn’t likely to play. We’ve noted Wilson’s versatility as a receiver, return man, sometimes runner and even an accurate passer as a former high school QB. Expect OC Kellen Moore to come up with some sort of trickeration featuring Wilson.
Week 9
Wilson took a big step backward from his increasing role in the Dallas offense. He had 2 catches on 5 targets for 24 yards. One of the misses was on a 1st-quarter 4th-and-2, when QB Dak Prescott threw the ball at Wilson’s feet. That was a defining moment for Wilson and for the Cowboys’ passing attack in a game badly lost.
Wilson began the season as a novelty act, able to return kicks, catch a pass as an extra WR, run on a sweep and even throw a pass. As his talents became recognized, he assumed a greater role. Barring injuries, with starting WR Michael Gallup likely to return Sunday from a strained calf, Wilson’s role for the 2nd half of the season could be represented in a pie chart with Wilson having a smaller and smaller slice.
Week 8
Wilson continues to impress in multiple ways. The jury was still out on QB Cooper Rush when the Cowboys came out of halftime. Then, on the 3rd play from scrimmage, Wilson beat man-to-man coverage on a pass down the middle, and then outmaneuvered that defender and the 2 safeties who came over to help for a 73-yard TD. Rush then won in a game decided by 4 points, with Wilson catching all 3 targets for 84 yards. The versatile Wilson completed his only pass attempt, a good spiral, for a 35-yard gain.
We’re not hearing much about WR Michael Gallup’s recovery from an injury, partly because Wilson has been so effective in the 3rd-WR role. Over the last 5 weeks, he has just 12 catches, but 3 have gone for TDs. There will be a place for him in a deep corps of WRs even when Gallup returns. Wilson also has been able to keep down WR Noah Brown’s opportunities (targeted twice, 1 complete for 7 yards at Minnesota).
Week 5
His 1 target against the Giants resulted in a 35-yard gain, on which he dragged his feet to stay in bounds. Wilson carried the ball once for 6 yards and the high school QB completed a wobbly pass to WR Noah Brown for a 22-yard gain. Among Cowboys OC Kellen Moore’s creative plays increasingly are including some designed for Wilson.
With WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup nursing injuries, Wilson has become a viable target for QB Dak Prescott. Wilson’s versatility could even make him a backup QB better than the backups we’ve seen (or this season barely seen) in the last 2 years. The offense would need retooling, because Wilson clearly can’t be expected to throw long but he could hand off to RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard or carry the ball himself on sweeps.
Week 4
For the 2nd week in a row, Wilson caught a TD pass in the end zone. He totaled just 30 yards while catching both targets in a game when Dallas QB Dak Prescott had just 22 pass attempts. Wilson has established himself as the Cowboys’ No. 3 WR in the absence of injured WR Michael Gallup.
Wilson’s fantasy value is tied directly to factors beyond his control – how close the Cowboys’ games are, how often Prescott has to throw, how effective the Dallas running game is. Wilson has shown what he can do with a small sample size. He’ll have some value if he continues to score a TD each week, but that modest value would be deflated when Gallup returns to the lineup.
Week 3
The stat sheet says Wilson caught just 2 of 4 targets for 17 yards. The eyes say that he made a difficult catch at the back of the end zone for a 3-yard TD and another while falling out of bounds for a 29-yard gain in tight coverage in front of the Eagles’ bench. However, that play became a missed target when a replay challenge ruled that Wilson had only 1 foot in bounds.
Wilson can be the Cowboys’ most versatile WR in a backup role. He can go long as he did down the sideline, and play a possession role as he did in the end zone. Wilson also has returned kicks. Until WR Michael Gallup returns from an injury, Wilson remains a receiving option behind WRs Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb.
Week 2
Wilson was not a reasonable facsimile for injured WR Michael Gallup, who is expected to miss 3-5 weeks because of a strained calf muscle. Wilson caught both passes thrown to him, for 20 inconsequential yards.
Lest we sell Wilson short, he is a versatile player who has run the ball on sweeps, thrown a pass or 2. And returned kicks. This season, he has caught all 5 passes QB Dak Prescott has thrown to him for a modest 54 yards. Wilson could be worth a look on deep rosters with multiple WRs and flex players. Even then, his value would rest on whether the Dallas offense is heavily through the air as in Week 1 rather than the greater number of rushing plays in Week 2. The defensive strength of opponents each week could be the key to Wilson’s fantasy value.

The Cowboys on Monday placed WR Cedrick Wilson on the COVID list after he tested positive. His absence doesn't mean much for fantasy football, now that Dallas' top 3 wideouts are back healthy. We'll keep our fingers crossed that his exposure doesn't bring down any higher-profile member of the Cowboys offense heading into Sunday's meeting with the Giants.

Cowboys rookie WR Cedrick Wilson suffered a torn shoulder labrum in Saturday's practice. It's not yet clear whether he'll require surgery or how long he'll be out. But the injury certainly help the chances of the 6th-round pick earning a role in 2018.

The Cowboys added Boise State WR Cedrick Wilson in the 6th round. Wilson is 1 of our favorite day-3 sleepers at WR. After spending 2 years at Coffeyville Community College, he transferred to Boise State and became an immediate factor. Wilson led the Broncos with 11 receiving TDs in 2016 and ranked 2nd with 56 catches and 1,129 yards. He set new career highs with 83 grabs and 1,511 yards this past season. Only James Washington tallied more yardage. Wilson is a wiry 6’2, 197 pounds with average athleticism. But he can play outside the numbers or in the slot and is a savvy route runner with plus after-the-catch ability. He joins a Cowboys WR corps that’s in transition after losing Dez Bryant and adding 3rd-round rookie Michael Gallup and vet Allen Hurns. There’s room for Wilson to carve out a role here.
