What You Need to Know:

  • Bates saw his playing time jump even before Logan Thomas’ knee injury last season. After topping out at 24% snap share through Week 8, he played 57% or more in every contest from Week 9 on.
  • That included 4 games of more than 70% playing time among the final 5, with Thomas out.
  • Bates reached 10% target share in just 4 games. He saw 8.8% target share in the 6 games after Thomas tore up his left knee.
  • Bates caught just 47 passes across 4 college seasons, with 22 of those coming in his junior year. HC Ron Rivera still called him a “high ceiling” player.
  • Thomas has said he’s targeting a Week 1 return, but he also conceded that his injury was expected to have a 10-month recovery. That put him on track for Week 4.
  • Besides Thomas, Bates’ primary competition looks like rookie Cole Turner, converted WR Antonio Gandy-Golden and rookie Cole Turner.
  • Bates isn’t fast (35th-percentile 40), but his 78th-percentile height for the position could play well in the red zone. And Rivera has already praised his blocking ability.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Given that he had 2 ligaments and a pair of meniscus injuries repaired, Logan Thomas doesn’t seem like a good bet to be ready for the opener. That could make Bates an early-season factor and makes him worth a look at the end of best-ball drafts.
