Former Titans TE Chigoziem Okonkwo agreed to terms with the Commanders for a three-year deal worth up to $30m. TE Zach Ertz entered free agency, leaving the Commanders with John Bates and Ben Sinnott as the only TEs on their roster. Okonkwo should step in as the starter in 2026 with Bates and Sinnott handling duties in 12 personnel. With Jayden Daniels at QB (and currently a lack of receiving options behind WR Terry McLaurin), Okonkwo could be a sleeper TE this season.
What They're Saying
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com: "The Commanders are expected to sign free agent TE Chig Okonkwo, per The Insiders, giving him a 3-year deal worth up to $30M done by agents Jared Fox and Jason Chayut."
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
Okonkwo could earn up to $10m a year according to the initial contract numbers. That makes a fairly hefty sum for a free agent TE. It locks him into not only the starting TE role, but likely a prominent pass-catching role.
Okonkwo's athleticism and long speed make him a threat. His 4.52 40-time being makes Okonkwo a big play threat anytime he touches the ball.
Okonkwo was TE28 in PPR points per game last year at 7.3, splitting time with rookie TE Gunnar Helm. The Commanders offense could certainly support Okonkwo's upside better than the Titans did.
Dynasty Impact
Dynasty managers hanging onto Ben Sinnott can likely move on from the former second-round pick. Sinnott was a popular rookie draft pick in 2024, but he was never able to beat out Ertz for playing time. Now he will sit behind Okonkwo.
The lack of opportunity means Sinnott should be cut in most formats.
Other Winners & Losers
Another weapon for Daniels should continue helping his fantasy numbers if he can stay healthy. The Commanders may not be done addressing their weapons, but Daniels gets the biggest fantasy boost with a competent athletic TE being added to the roster.
Projected ADP Movement
Okonkwo's ADP should be on the rise with a sizable contract and a young, exciting QB. He currently sits at TE35 in Best Ball Underdog ADP.
Even with a large increase, Okonkwo could still be a sleeper TE if you wait on the position.
