Bottom Line

Okonkwo is an athletic TE/WR hybrid who was never used correctly in the previous offense.

He flashed at times, though, and the new offense led by HC Brian Callahan could utilize his abilities a bit more.

On the downside, Okonkwo faces more target competition this year with the arrival of WR Calvin Ridley.

That leaves Okonkwo as a volatile TE2 who will likely be more valuable in best-ball leagues than managed leagues.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Okonkwo’s per-game numbers were generally an improvement over his rookie season:
    • 4.53 targets (up from 2.71)
    • 3.18 receptions (up from 1.88)
    • 31.1 yards (up from 26.5)
    • 9.8 yards per catch (down from 14.1)
    • 0.06 TDs per game (down from 0.18)
  • He ranked as the PPR TE21 in total fantasy points and TE30 in points per game.
  • He played all 17 games and has not missed a game in his entire career.
  • He had two top-12 finishes. He also had nine TE25 or worse finishes.
  • Okonkwo’s target share of 16.5% ranked 17th among TEs. It was an improvement over last year’s 11.8%.
  • Among 33 TEs with at least 40+ targets, Okonkwo ranked:
    • 26th in Pro Football Focus receiving grade
    • 19th in yards per route run (1.31)
    • 16th in average target depth (7.0)

What to Expect in 2024

  • Okonkwo enters his third season on the Titans, but his first season with:
  • HC and play caller Brian Callahan
  • OC Nick Holz
  • The Titans figure to throw it significantly more under the new coaching staff.
    • Four of Callahan’s five Bengals offenses ranked top-12 in pass rate, including a trio of top-6 finishes.
    • The Titans never finished higher than 24th in pass rate in six seasons under HC Mike Vrabel.
  • The Titans are expected to perform similarly to last season. They are fourth in highest win total in the AFC South at 6.5 wins on most sportsbooks.
  • They sit tied for 27th in terms of highest Super Bowl odds at +15000 on most sportsbooks.
  • Okonkwo enters his third season at 25 years old. According to our aging curve research, the average TE with Okonkwo’s career and profile will produce peak value at age-25.
  • He’ll face tougher target competition this season after the Titans added WR Calvin Ridley on a big four-year, $92 million deal. WR DeAndre Hopkins returns after leading the team with a 27.7% target share last year.

Chigoziem Okonkwo, TE TEN

Titans Will Use Committee At TE

Titans HC Brian Callahan said his team will fill the TE role with "a lot of different players." TEs Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle, and Nick Vannett will all get "plenty of opportunities" this season, Callahan added.

The Titans are set to hire Brian Callahan as their new HC, according to multiple sources. It'll be the 39-year-old's first HC gig. Callahan spent the past five seasons as Cincinnati's OC, leading the Bengals to top-13 finishes in total yards and points in 2021 and 2022. Cincinnati sunk to 22nd in yards and 16th in points this past year, due in large part to QB Joe Burrow missing 7.5 games. Callahan was a pass-leaning play caller, with four of his five Bengals offenses ranking top-12 in pass rate, including a trio of top-6 finishes. That means a big shift is coming in Tennessee, where the Titans never finished higher than 25th in pass attempts in six seasons under HC Mike Vrabel. Callahan's arrival is certainly good news for the fantasy upside on QB Will Levis, WRs DeAndre Hopkins and Treylon Burks, and TE Chig Okonkwo.

The Titans fired HC Mike Vrabel. Tennessee went 41-24 over Vrabel's first four seasons, making the playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021. But the Titans won just 13 games total over the last two seasons and ranked bottom-5 in total offense both years. This offense might look a lot different in 2024, with a new coaching staff and potentially no Derrick Henry.

Titans TE Chig Okonkwo is active for today’s game vs. the Seahawks. He missed Friday's practice with an illness, but we’re expecting him to be ready for his usual role today.

Titans TE Chig Okonkwo missed Friday's practice with an illness and is listed as questionable for Week 16. It's unlikely to keep him from playing vs. the Seahawks, but you'll need to check back around 11:30 am ET on Sunday to make sure Okonkwo is active.

Chig failed to take a major step forward in year two, averaging just 6.7 PPR points per game. He remained active for all 17 games for the second straight season, at least. Now, he'll play under a new HC in former Bengals OC Brian Callahan.
