We spend most of our time trying to discern what coach speak should mean for how we value certain players in fantasy. But a reporter asked Chargers OC Mike McDaniel about the planned work share in his backfield this season, and he answered by speaking directly to us.
What They're Saying: Expect Variable Work Splits
McDaniel, via ESPN's Kris Rhim: "Bad news, fantasy owners. Good news is I see all three of those guys producing at a very high level. Bad news is I can't tell you which games those are."
Rhim added: "He said he'll probably use all three every game, with the workload depending on the opponent and 'hot hand.'"
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Hampton Looks Shaky
This is terrible news for Hampton because of his Round 2 ADP across formats.
It's not that he can't pay off at that draft price. But if you're selecting an RB that early, you're looking for reliable weekly workloads. And that's the one thing we can glean from McDaniel's comments for certain: The weekly work splits are likely to vary.
Mitchell and Vidal, on the other hand, are going well into the double-digit rounds. At that point, you're grabbing bench stashes you hope will pay off at some point.
Mitchell's speed and big-play upside make him the better bet between the two to supply spike weeks on limited work. He'll be difficult to start in common-sized fantasy football leagues, but there's intriguing upside for deeper formats and best ball.
A Hampton injury, though, would likely still mean unpredictable work splits. So neither Mitchell nor Vidal fits as a true handcuff.
