Jason Witten Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Raiders have agreed to a 1-year, $4.75 million deal with TE Jason Witten. It's an odd fit, given that Las Vegas had both Darren Waller and rookie Foster Moreau emerge last year. We'll see if Witten actually makes the regular-season roster. Either way, he looks like a fantasy non-factor.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has been impressed by TE Jason Witten this spring. “I guess the trick is to take a year off because he’s definitely gotten better, stronger and faster,” Prescott said. “He hasn’t lost a step.” Witten won't be out-athleting any defenders this season, but it's still nice to hear he's looking good at 37 years old after taking 2018 off. We'll see how he holds up throughout training camp and the season. Witten posted a 63-560-5 line and 9th-place PPR finish when we saw him last in 2017. We'd bet against that level of production this year, but Witten could be a useful spot-start option for fantasy squads.

The Cowboys announced that TE Jason Witten will return to play in 2019. He retired last May and bombed in the Monday Night Football booth. Now he'll head back to the field, where he's been much better. "This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship," Witten said in a statement. He'll turn 37 in May and averaged a career-low 8.9 yards per catch when we last saw him in 2017. But he still caught 63 balls that year and finished 9th among TEs in PPR points. We'll see what the year off did but won't rule out Witten being at least a spot-start option for fantasy teams in 2019.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Cowboys TE Jason Witten plans to retire and join the Monday Night Football broadcast team, though he'll meet with Jerry Jones before making it official. Assuming he does finalize that decision, Witten would join Dez Bryant in removing about 45% of targets from last year's Dallas offense. Witten's share slipped to 17.7%, while his 8.9 yards per catch marked a career low. With TE James Hanna also retiring, Rico Gathers could face big opportunity in his 2nd season. We'll see whether the Cowboys add pass-catchers -- either at TE or WR -- in the next 2 rounds of the NFL Draft on Friday.

The Cowboys and TE Jason Witten have agreed to a 4-year contract extension, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. It tacks on to the final year of his current deal to lock Witten up through the 2021 season. He'll be 39 at that point, so we doubt he makes it through the life of this contract. But it at least confirms that Witten remains a significant part of Dallas' offense. He ranked 11th among TEs in PPR points last year -- and that was his worst finish since his 2003 rookie campaign.

Cowboys HC Jason Garrett confirmed to ESPN's Ed Werder that he won't rest starters in tonight's game against the Lions. Dallas has clinched the NFC's #1 seed and could limit or hold out some guys in the regular-season finale. But doing so tonight would mean 3 weeks off between games. QB Dak Prescott, RB Ezekiel Elliott, WR Dez Bryant and TE Jason Witten are all safe to use in Week 16 fantasy lineups.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten drew 7 targets in Sunday night's loss to the Giants, tying for 2nd on the team. He caught 4 for a nondescript 26 yards, but the 7 looks marked a rebound rom 3 and 0 in his past 2 outings. Witten remains a low-ceiling fantasy option and gets a tougher draw in Week 15 with the Bucs, who entered Sunday ranked 6th in Football Outsiders' TE coverage ratings. After that, however, comes #29 Detroit.

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the 49ers. The team has seemingly been over-optimistic about Bryant's status. There's a good chance he misses multiple games with the hairline fracture in his knee. Terrance Williams and Brice Butler will serve as Dallas' outside WRs this weekend, with Cole Beasley in the slot. Beasley and TE Jason Witten are the best target bets.

ESPN's Adam Schefter confirms that Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (knee) is not expected to play against the 49ers on Sunday. He's likely looking at a multi-week absence. We've removed Bryant from the Week 4 Rankings, lowered QB Dak Prescott and given bumps up to Cole Beasley, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten.

The forecast for today's Cowboys-Bills game calls for a 70% chance of rain with 15-16 mph winds.  That'll only push both offenses more toward the run.  TE Jason Witten is the only legitimate fantasy option on Dallas' passing game, and his short-range stuff shouldn't be impacted.  The biggest loser here is Bills WR Sammy Watkins, whose downfield routes figure to be compromised.  Downgrade him to a lower-end WR2.

Cowboys HC Jason Garrett has named QB Kellen Moore the starter for Sunday's game against the Bills.  Stepping in for QB Matt Cassel on Saturday night, Moore completed 15 of 25 passes for 158 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs.  He's obviously not a fantasy option.  More relevant: Moore targeted WR Dez Bryant 7 times (4 catches, 1 TD), Jason Witten 4 times (4 catches) and Cole Beasley 7 times (3 catches).

Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar tore his Achilles in Saturday night's loss to the Jets.  That ends his 2015 season and makes him very iffy for the start of the 2016 campaign.  Escobar is an intriguing 6'6, 260-pound prospect who's been stuck behind future Hall-of-Famer Jason Witten for the past 3 years.  He has just 26 career catches, but 7 of them have gone for TDs.  We'll track his recovery this offseason, but Escobar probably won't be draftable next summer even if Witten hangs up the cleats.

The forecast for today's Cowboys-Packers game calls for an 80% chance of rain with 11-14 mph winds.  It's not quite enough for us to move any guys in this game in the Week 14 rankings, but use the weather as a tiebreaker.  This could turn into a run-heavy game on both sides.

The forecast for today's Cowboys-Dolphins game calls for an 85% chance of rain, thunderstorms and winds of 10-14 mph.  It's not quite enough for us to alter our projections, but the sloppy conditions should be used as a tiebreaker if you're on the fence about using a Cowboy or Dolphin in your fantasy lineup.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten is active for today’s game against the Falcons. He’ll be playing through 2 sprained ankles and a sprained knee. That, plus QB Brandon Weeden, makes Witten more of a low-end fantasy starter.

Despite spraining both ankles and a knee last weekend, Cowboys TE Jason Witten is listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Falcons. He practiced all week, including a full workout on Friday. He’ll run his streak to 190 straight games played. But at less than 100% and with Brandon Weeden under center, Witten is just a low-end TE1.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten is practicing on Wednesday, despite spraining both ankles and a knee last Sunday.  We shouldn't be surprised.  This guy hasn't missed a game since his 2003 rookie season and now appears set to play against the Falcons this weekend.  But between the injuries and Dallas' QB situation, Witten will be more of a low-end TE1 for that one.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Cowboys TE Jason Witten is dealing with a sprained knee and 2 sprained ankles.  He played through the injuries in last week's win over the Eagles and hasn't missed a game since his 2003 rookie campaign.  But Werder says Witten is "not a lock" to be ready for this Sunday's game against the Falcons.  We'll track his practice participation over the next few days.  But between the injuries and the QB situation, Witten is a shaky Week 3 fantasy play.

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will undergo foot surgery on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.  He'll have a screw inserted to repair a break in his 5th metatarsal.  That's the long bone of the pinkie toe.  Dallas is pegging Bryant's rehab timeline at 4-6 weeks, but that might be optimistic.  Dr. David Chao, a former NFL head team physician, believes that a "more realistic estimate might be 6-8 weeks."  Bryant owners shouldn't be counting on Bryant before the Cowboys come out of their Week 6 bye.  Terrance Williams will step in as Dallas' #1 WR while Bryant is out, making him a weekly WR3 with upside.  Cole Beasley, Jason Witten and Lance Dunbar should also see targets boosts.
