What You Need to Know:
  • The Chiefs selected Moore with the 54th overall pick of this year’s draft. He was the 13th WR off the board.
  • Moore played QB and CB in high school but transitioned to WR at Western Michigan.
  • He led the team with 51 catches and 802 receiving yards as a freshman in 2019.
  • Moore played in 5 of 6 games in a COVID-shortened 2020 season, setting new personal bests with 5.0 catches, 77.6 yards and .6 TDs per game – all 2nd to 5th-year senior D’Wayne Eskridge.
  • With Eskridge off to the NFL last year, Moore exploded for a 95-1,291-10 line.
    • He ranked 9th in the country in catches and 14th in receiving yards.
    • His 91.8 PFF receiving grade ranked 3rd in the country behind only Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba and USC’s Drake London.
    • Moore’s 3.40 yards per route run was good for 8th among 251 WRs with 50+ targets.
  • Moore was position-versatile last year.
    • He played 69.5% of his snaps on the outside and 30.5% in the slot.
    • He averaged a strong 3.11 yards per route from the outside and an even-better 3.93 from the inside.
  • Moore checked in at 5’10 and 195 pounds at the Combine and recorded these measurables:
    • 40-yard dash: 4.41 seconds (82nd percentile)
    • Vertical: 34.5” (38th)
    • Broad: 10’5” (77th)
    • 3-cone: 7.13 seconds (20th)
    • Short shuttle: 4.32 seconds (30th)
  • For more on Moore’s college production and tape, check out his full prospect profile.
  • The Chiefs traded WR Tyreek Hill to Miami in March.
    • Hill garnered a career-high 9.4 targets per game last year.
    • He averaged 9.0, 7.4, and 8.6 targets per game the previous 3 seasons.
  • The Chiefs also lost WRs Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson this offseason. Those 2 combined for 15.0% of the Chiefs’ targets, 15.0% of the receptions, 16.9% of the receiving yards and 21.6% of the receiving scores last year.
  • Prior to drafting Moore, Kansas City signed WRs JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
  • TE Travis Kelce and WR Mecole Hardman return … along with QB Patrick Mahomes and HC Andy Reid.
  • The Athletic’s Nate Taylor wrote in May that the Chiefs believe Moore “can excel as a secondary slot receiver behind Smith-Schuster and be a possible deep threat on the perimeter in one-on-one matchups.”
Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Moore is a good-looking prospect, checking boxes for college production, tape and measurables. He landed in an ideal spot on a Chiefs offense with Patrick Mahomes that’s looking to replace Tyreek Hill’s snaps and production.

We’ll see how the playing time shakes out between Moore, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman. Moore certainly has a chance to win a big role – and even lead Chiefs WRs in targets this season. Just be careful not to overpay for the rookie in fantasy drafts.

Mecole Hardman, WR KC

Hardman out Wednesday

Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman (heel) did not practice on Wednesday. His status for Sunday night's game vs. the Bucs is uncertain. Hardman's absence would free up snaps for WR Skyy Moore and/or WR Justin Watson.

Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster tied Travis Kelce for the target lead (8) in Sunday's loss to the Colts, tied Clyde Edwards-Helaire for the reception lead (5) and paced the team with 89 receiving yards. He remained close to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman in routes: 35 for MVS, 33 for Smith-Schuster and 28 for Hardman. Valdes-Scantling drew 7 targets for the 2nd straight game, while Hardman garnered just 1. QB Patrick Mahomes spread his attempts around less than in the Week 2 win over the Chargers. With Hardman back healthy -- he was in and out of the Week 2 contest -- WR Justin Watson played just 10 snaps; Skyy Moore 8.

Chiefs WR Skyy Moore played 13 snaps in Week 1 and just 2 in Week 2. "Moving forward, I guarantee you'll see more than two snaps," OC Eric Bieniemy said Thursday. It's not a major surprise that a rookie from the MAC is off to a slow start. Moore remains an intriguing prospect -- and none of the other Chiefs WRs have stood out so far. Moore shouldn't be in Week 3 fantasy lineups, but he's worth stashing in fantasy leagues of 10+ teams.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor believes Mecole Hardman will open the season as the Chiefs' #2 WR -- behind JuJu Smith-Schuster but ahead of Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore. "Because he’s the fastest in the group and has been in the Chiefs’ system the longest," Taylor writes. We'll be keeping a close eye on the route and target counts in this group early in the season. But Smith-Schuster will be the only reliable Week 1 fantasy starter.

Chiefs starters played 1 possession in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears. JuJu Smith-Schuster led the WRs with 11 snaps, followed by Marquez Valdes-Scantling (9), Mecole Hardman (4) and Justin Watson (1), according to Pro Football Focus. Skyy Moore did not get onto the field with that unit. We'll see how that usage pattern develops through the preseason.

Moore got the nut landing spot in Kansas City. It’s at least worth noting that he was only the 13th WR off the board in the NFL Draft. But c’mon – he’s now tied to Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid! Moore stuffed the stat sheet at Western Michigan, brings inside/outside versatility and tested as a 75th percentile athlete at the Combine. He and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are the only WRs the Chiefs have signed past 2022.
