The Titans are expected to open RB Tyjae Spears' 21-day practice window this week, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Spears landed on IR entering the season because of a high ankle sprain suffered back on Aug. 9. The window means he could practice for as much as three weeks before the team has to decide whether to activate him.
Spears has had well more than a month to recover from his injury. So although high ankle sprains can make for tricky returns, we're betting Spears will be ready to play soon. And the Titans need him.
Tony Pollard has ranked among the better-performing offensive players to date, but he also has little competition for that mantle. That's why we should expect Spears to quickly find a role.
The big question, of course, will be whether that role can claim enough work to make Spears fantasy-relevant. That's hard to imagine right now.
Pollard sits tied for seventh-most carries in the league (with two Week 4 games pending as of this writing) and has dominated backfield passing-down work. Yet he ranks just 29th in PPR points per game.
Even a 50-50 split of that wouldn't be attractive for either player.
Spears is worth grabbing and stashing where available. But he'll probably need a Pollard injury to make it into fantasy lineups out side the deepest of leagues.
