Colts Add Older Rookie RB to a Thin RB Room

The Indianapolis Colts selected Kentucky RB Seth McGowan in Round 7 of the 2026 NFL Draft. McGowan began his career at Oklahoma in 2022. Robbery and battery charges derailed his path, though. “It was difficult. At some point, I was facing like 70 years,” he admitted in comments made to Kentucky Sports Radio. He resurfaced at Butler Community College in 2023 before jumping to New Mexico State in 2024. There, he out-produced fellow prospect Mike Washington Jr. 5.4 yards per carry to 4.6. McGowan’s 2025 slipped, however, as he mustered only 4.4 YPC at Kentucky. Among the 20 RBs invited to the NFL Combine, McGowan ranked seventh in 2025 rushing market share (47.5%), and 17th in yards after contact per attempt (2.72). He ranked 12th in 2025 missed tackles forced per attempt (0.21) and 17th in receiving yards per route run (0.70). He is currently 25 years old.

Jonathan Taylor End-Zone Party Masks Solid Raiders Run D

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor delivered his second 3-TD game of the season in Sunday's beatdown of the Raiders. Taylor tallied a 17-66-3 rushing line to go with 3 receptions for 20 yards. DJ Giddens followed with 22 yards on five carries. Ameer Abdullah also made his Colts debut, running for 6 yards and a TD on two carries.

DJ Giddens Looking Like the Jonathan Taylor Handcuff; Maybe More

Jonathan Taylor dominated Colts backfield work last season, ranking second league wide in opportunity share (carries plus targets, adjusted for games missed) and fifth in carries despite missing three full contests. But Indy needs a better backup plan than last year's Trey Sermon-Tyler Goodson combo. And fifth-round rookie DJ Giddens looks like the early leader to replace that pair. According to ESPN's Stephen Holder, though, Giddens also looks like a candidate to siphon some receiving work even when Taylor's healthy.

Colts Draft Potential Back-up RB DJ Giddens

The Colts selected Kansas State RB DJ Giddens with the 151st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Giddens initially played behind current Cowboy Deuce Vaughn. Come 2023, he broke out with 1,226 rushing yards and 10 TDs -- plus 29 receptions -- across 13 games. Last fall, Giddens’ advanced metrics improved alongside a career-high 1,343 rushing yards (12 games). He particularly popped with 6.6 YPC and 4.16 yards after contact per attempt, per Pro Football Focus. The 212-pounder also brings plus vision and patience along with a relatively clean injury history. Now, his receiving looked fairly raw on tape, as he struggled with drops in ‘24. And like most rookies, he’s unrefined as a pass protector. Still, the size, production, and rush efficiency signal a potential impact in the NFL.
