Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said Tuesday that kicker Brett Maher has won the team’s starting job. McCarthy pointed out Maher’s leg strength and recent confidence as reasons for choosing him over Lirim Hajrullahu. Maher figures to be a viable streaming option this season.

The Cowboys released K Jonathan Garibay and signed K Brett Maher on Tuesday. Garibay had reportedly struggled mightily in camp. Maher and K Lirim Hajrullahu will duke it out for the starting job over the next month. It's a situation to avoid in fantasy drafts until we get a winner.

Lirim Hajrullahu looks like the early leader in the Cowboys' kicker competition. Undrafted rookie Jonathan Garibay has struggled, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic, making only about 50% of his FG attempts in training camp to date. On Saturday alone, Hajrullahu beat Garibay 8-of-11 to 4-of-11. Jerry Jones pointed out that they've been challenging the kickers by making them kick into the wind and said he'd like to see how they fare in the stadium. We'll see how the rest of the competition plays out, but Garibay doesn't look worthwhile as an early pick in leagues with kickers.

The Panthers are signing K Lirim Hajrullahu, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. He'll replace Zane Gonzalez, who suffered an injury in warmups ahead of Sunday's loss to the Bills.

The Cowboys signed K Lirim Hajrullahu. He'll kick against the Falcons on Sunday if K Greg Zuerlein remains on the COVID list. The Cowboys are sporting the highest implied total of the week, so whoever is kicking for them will be a nice fantasy play.

The Cowboys have agreed to a deal with free-agent K Lirim Hajrullahu, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The former CFL kicker went to training camp with the Rams last summer but didn't make the regular-season roster and has yet to kick in a regular-season NFL game. He joined the Panthers this offseason but got cut in March. The addition is significant because Dallas K Greg Zuerlein has yet to come off the PUP list following offseason back surgery. We'll have to keep an eye on Zuerlein as we get into the meat of fantasy football draft season. If you're drafting this week, it's probably best to pass on the veteran kicker.

The Rams released Ks Austin MacGinnis and Lirim Hajrullahu. That leaves Sam Sloman as the starter heading into Week 1. We'd avoid him in fantasy lineups for now -- but he might emerge as a spot-start option.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the Rams are signing K Lirim Hajrullahu. The Canadian-born kicker spent the past 6 seasons in the CFL, earning 2 all-star bids. He converted 83.3% of FG attempts over that span, finishing 5 of 6 campaigns above 80%. Hajrullahu's career long of 56 yards came last season. He looks like the favorite to take over for Greg Zuerlein, who signed with Dallas this offseason. Zuerlein fell to 72.7% in FG conversion rate last year after 3 straight seasons of better than 85%.
