The Vikings will release RB Aaron Jones prior to the start of the new league year, barring a trade, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The move will save Minnesota $7.75 million against the cap.
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
No surprise here. Jones, who turned 31 in December, missed five games last year and averaged a career-low 4.2 yards per carry. He also posted career lows in:
- Rush yards over expected per attempt
- Yards after contact per carry
- Missed tackles forced per carry
- Pro Football Focus rushing grade
We'll see where Jones lands on the open market, but don't expect him to have more than a 1B, pass-catching role in his new backfield.
Jones' departure will leave Jordan Mason as Minnesota's only RB signed in 2026. RB Zavier Scott is an exclusive-rights free agent and will likely be back. And the Vikings will add another body or two to the mix in free agency and/or the draft.
But Mason has a good chance to lead this backfield in 2026. He never surpassed a healthy Jones last year, but Mason averaged a strong 4.8 yards per carry on his 159 attempts. He ranked top 11 among 51 qualifying RBs in yards per carry, rush yards over expected per attempt, and yards after contact per attempt.
Mason looks like a nice value at his current RB45 best-ball ADP.
