Jaguars WR Jakobi Meyers had his right hand in a brace on the sidelines of Friday night's preseason game vs. the Panthers. The injury was revealed to be a jammed right thumb that could cause him to miss time. The assumption would be that the second overall pick in 2025, Travis Hunter, would benefit from increased offensive snaps if Meyers’ injury lingers into the season. But according to Juston Lewis of the Florida Times-Union, that may not be the case.
What They're Saying: Hunter May Not Fill In
Juston Lewis, Florida Times-Union: “A player who likely would not fill the void for Meyers would be two-way player Travis Hunter as he continues to trend toward being a starter on Jacksonville's defense. Hunter is listed behind Brian Thomas Jr. on the depth chart on offense and has largely focused on that specific position in Coen's system as opposed to the multiple positions he learned during his rookie season.”
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Hunter Looks Hard To Draft
Lewis says Hunter has primarily worked as the team's No. 2 X WR behind Brian Thomas Jr. throughout camp, not in Meyers' role in HC Liam Coen’s offense. That narrower focus in his limited offensive reps likely gives him more clarity in his WR learning curve than last year.
This is even more reason not to draft Travis Hunter this year. If he won’t even see increased snaps with a Meyers or Parker Washington injury, it’ll be tough to start him this season (unless Thomas goes down).
Lewis also said Meyers' replacement snaps could come down to two sixth-round rookies: Josh Cameron and C.J. Williams.
Cameron was the more highly drafted of the two, and has been impressive in training camp. Lewis commented that he has consistently made plays when given opportunities, reeling in jump-ball passes and emerging as a downfield threat
He has an intriguing profile coming out of college as well. Cameron is a power player at 6’2 and 220 pounds. He’s a legitimate red-zone weapon with strong body control, timing, and ball tracking. Cameron was one of only six FBS players with 19+ receiving scores over the past two college seasons.
Williams is Meyers' immediate backup on the unofficial depth chart, which gives him a path to more snaps.
He is another physical WR at 6’1, 199 pounds. He lacks the burst and speed to really win consistently, but the Jaguars drafted him regardless.
