The Indianapolis Star reports that the Colts will allow DE/OLB Dwight Freeney and WR Austin Collie to hit free agency. That's no surprise in either case. Collie played in just 1 game last year. He ruptured his right patella tendon that day and landed on IR. That recovery plus his concussion history certainly won't help his market value. It was actually a bit surprising that the team kept Freeney last year as it transitioned to a 3-4 defense. Freeney will turn 33 next week and collected just 5 sacks in 2012. He's likely headed for a situational-rusher role somewhere.

Colts DE Dwight Freeney has been operating without an agent for the past year, since former rep Gary Wichard died. Now he's hiring CAA to represent him. That suggests the expected. Freeney has 1 huge year left on his contract and doesn't make a ton of sense for a team clearly in full rebuilding mode. New representation indicates that Freeney is about to either renegotiate his deal with the Colts or head elsewhere. At 31, Freeney played 114 fewer snaps last year than in 2010 and registered just 8.5 sacks. He still ranked 9th among 4-3 DEs in pass-rushing performance, according to Pro Football Focus. His career is winding down, but Freeney can still produce. His situation will be interesting.

Just after applying the franchise tag to DE Robert Mathis on Monday, the Colts reached a 4-year, $36 million deal with the veteran. Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports that Mathis will get $17 million of that in 2012 and $24 million over the 1st 2 years. That makes it look like a contract the team expects Mathis to complete, rather than a backloaded, showy deal. Mathis was more productive than teammate DE Dwight Freeney in 2011, but he also wasn't up to his previous standards in terms of pocket pressure. Mathis' small stature and speed repertoire might appeal to a new defensive staff with lots of 3-4 background. His new contract also could make it difficult for the Colts to keep Freeney around at his current rate. Freeney is due a little more than $14 million in base salary for the coming season.

DE Dwight Freeney is listed as questionable for Sunday but should be good to go. Freeney has been dealing with an abdominal injury but practiced in full on Friday. The Colts don't practice truly questionable players. Freeney is a boom-bust IDP proposition, though Chiefs LT Branden Albert has performed well so far. That adds to Freeney's risk.

Colts DE Dwight Freeney suffered a sprained right ankle in Sunday's AFC Championship win over the Jets.  With two weeks to prepair, the injury shouldn't hinder his availability for the Super Bowl.  Expect him to sit out the majority of practices over the next two weeks, and be ready come February 7th.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Colts DE Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle.  If true, it would put his availabilty for next Sunday's Super Bowl in serious doubt.  At best, he'll be on a limited snap count.  It's great news for the Saints passing game.

The Colts have confirmed that DE Dwight Freeney suffered a 3rd degree ankle sprain in the team's AFC Championship win over the Jets.  It's the worst kind and usually requires up to 6 weeks of rest.  Freeney is expected to be listed as "questionable" for the Super Bowl and may give it a go.  But he'll play limited snaps and won't be his usual disruptive self. 

Tuesday is media day for the Super Bowl, and Colts DE Dwight Freeney (ankle) was the center of attention.  Freeney confirmed that he won't practice at all this week, but he didn't rule out playing on Sunday.  "Hopefully, towards the end of the week it starts to get better," he said. "The decision (of whether to play) will come later on. It's kind of early now."  Freeney will be a game-time decision.

Colts DE Dwight Freeney (abdomen) did not travel with the team to Houston and won't play Sunday against the Texans.  It's great news for QB Matt Schaub and the passing game.  Houston will be able to double-team DE Robert Mathis and give Schaub plenty of time in the pocket.

ESPN reported last night that Freeney would miss 2-3 weeks with a right quadriceps injury.  There has been no confirmation from the Colts, and team President Bill Polian said last night that there was no bad news relayed to him regarding an MRI that was done yesterday.  We will update this as more news  becomes available.

Freeney pocketed $30 million guaranteed when he signed that $72m extension last summer so whatever happens going forward he's got that money.
