Basic StatsTyler Higbee's Preseason Player Analysis

View TE Fantasy Rankings »
What You Need to Know:
  • Higbee posted a 61-560-5 line in 15 games last season, missing 2 on the COVID list.
  • He sprained his right MCL in the NFC Championship and missed the Super Bowl. He underwent surgery in the offseason but was able to get on the field for OTAs. He should be 100% for training camp.
  • Higbee finished 15th among TEs in both PPR and non-PPR points per game last year.
  • He ranked 15th at the position in target share, 13th in total targets, 7th in red-zone targets and 5th in end-zone targets.
  • Higbee’s 10.0 expected PPR points per game ranked 11th among TEs.
  • His best fantasy season to date came in 2019, when he finished 8th at his position in PPR points and 9th in non-PPR.
  • Higbee finished 18th in PPR and non-PPR points in 2020.
  • His ranks among TEs with 40+ targets in Pro Football Focus’ receiving grades:
    • 2019 - 3rd out of 27
    • 2020 - 13th out of 26
    • 2021 - 17th out of 25
  • Higbee will be back in HC Sean McVay’s offense in 2022.
  • QB Matt Stafford returns for his 2nd season with the Rams.
    • Stafford got an injection in his right elbow after the Super Bowl to address an issue that bothered him during last season. He didn’t throw during the offseason program but is expected to be throwing by training camp.
  • WR Robert Woods was traded to the Titans in March. WR Odell Beckham remains unsigned as of mid-June after tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl.
    • Those 2 combined for 19.3% of the Rams’ targets, 17.7% of the catches, 17.6% of the receiving yards and 22.0% of the receiving TDs last year.
  • The Rams signed WR Allen Robinson to a 3-year, $46.5 million deal in free agency.
  • WRs Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson return after finishing 1st and 2nd – right ahead of Higbee – on the team in targets last season.
  • Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic says Rams TE Tyler Higbee will be "fully cleared" from his winter knee surgery ahead of the coming season.
Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Higbee saw top-12 TE usage last season and finished 15th at the position in both PPR and non-PPR points per game.

He should be in a similar role this year for a Rams team that lost WRs Robert Woods and Odell Beckham and signed WR Allen Robinson.

29-year-old Higbee probably doesn’t have a ceiling beyond what we’ve already seen to this point. But he’s a relatively safe bet once you get outside the top 10 or so TEs in fantasy drafts.

Allen Robinson, WR LAR

8:30am EDT 9/19/22

Robinson scores; Kupp dominates again

Rams WR Allen Robinson enjoyed a much better Week 2 than opener, posting a 4-53-1 receiving line on 5 targets in the win over the Falcons. He checked in 3rd among Rams in targets but drew just 13.9% of QB Matthew Stafford's total attempts. WR Cooper Kupp again dominated the work, garnering 38.9% target share. He racked up 11-108-2 on 14 targets. TE Tyler Higbee ranked 2nd with 9 targets, catching 7 balls for 71 yards. Higbee has claimed a strong 26% target share through 2 weeks. No other Rams drew more than 3 looks vs. Atlanta.

Mixed results for Rams TE Tyler Higbee in Thursday night's opener vs. the Bills. He didn't deliver much for fantasy owners, catching 5 balls for just 39 yards with a couple of drops. But the usage was strong. Higbee ran a route on 92% of pass plays and saw 11 targets (26.8% share). If he continues to get anywhere close to that kind of playing time and volume, he'll be a strong bet to finish the season as a top-12 fantasy TE.

Rams WR Van Jefferson (knee) did not practice on Monday. He's looking like a long shot for Thursday night's opener vs. the Bills after undergoing knee surgery at the beginning of August. Jefferson's absence will leave Tutu Atwell and Ben Skowronek at the Rams' #3 and #4 WRs -- and leave extra targets for WR Cooper Kupp, WR Allen Robinson and TE Tyler Higbee.

Rams HC Sean McVay spoke about QB Matthew Stafford's right elbow issue on Thursday. McVay called it "a tricky deal," "abnormal for a QB” and "things that MLB pitchers deal with," per The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue. McVay added that the team explored different treatment options to alleviate the pain this offseason and that the team wasn't caught off guard by the situation when camp opened. “Could he (push through)? Yes. Is that the best thing? We didn’t think so," McVay said. Here's Rodrigue's take after listening to McVay: "While arm pain is never NOT a concern my sense is after some treatment early spring they decided to go with this onload/deload plan which has been on schedule per McVay." Until we hear that the pain in Stafford's elbow is gone -- or at least know exactly what he's dealing with -- he'll carry some elevated risk in fantasy drafts. His situation, of course, also impacts Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson and the rest of the Rams' skill-position guys.

Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic says Rams TE Tyler Higbee will be "fully cleared" from his winter knee surgery ahead of the coming season. That confirms what we expected. It's not yet clear, though, just how far ahead of Week 1 he'll be at full strength. Don't be surprised if Higbee starts training camp with limited (or no) participation. His ADP near the bottom of TE2 range, however, leaves little risk to a guy who finished 14th in PPR scoring in 2021.
