Higbee is looking like a low-end TE1, sitting 14th in expected fantasy points and 13th in actual fantasy points. The ceiling is elevated on Sunday, though, in a plum matchup vs. a Lions defense that Football Outsiders ranks dead-last in TE coverage.

Week 6
Higbee caught all 5 of his targets for 36 yards in the Week 6 drubbing in New York. He didn’t play a major role in the offense but was used early on as QB Matthew Stafford was cooking with gas. He tied WR Robert Woods for 2nd on the team in targets, trailing only All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp in looks.
Higbee has been hit-or-miss this year and has become too reliant on scoring TDs. He has a nice rapport with Stafford, but he’s really the 3rd option in an explosive passing game.
Week 5
Higbee saved his fantasy day with a TD, as he only saw 2 targets on the week. Higbee continues to see a lot of usage as he ran the third most routes on the team. The issue is the type of usage Higbee is getting. The Rams have lined up Higbee on the perimeter and he basically operates as a decoy to allow Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods to dominate in the middle of the field. Even when Higbee runs his routes in line he operates as a safety valve that Stafford rarely uses.
The good news for Higbee owners is once they get in the red zone, then the Rams feature Higbee. The best play of the day for him was the seam route Higbee ran for his TD in the red zone. It is tough to bank on a TD every week, but with how well the Rams offense is playing, Higbee has a good shot as anyone to find it. This makes him a low-end TE1 again in another plus matchup vs. the Giants in Week 6.
Week 3
Higbee continues to dominate TE usage with the departure of Gerald Everett. Once again Higbee received all 5 TE targets and is the only TE to receive a target this season. Higbee finally found the end zone this week, which is an encouraging sign for his fantasy value moving forward. WR Cooper Kupp has been the main red zone threat, but Higbee saw 2 targets this week inside the opponent’s 20 after only seeing 1 in Weeks 1 and 2.
Heading into Week 4 it isn’t crazy to say we haven’t seen the best out of the Rams pass game yet. Stafford through 3 weeks is 27th in dropbacks and 22nd in attempts. If the Rams begin to see their pass volume increase, Higbee and all the other pass catchers behind Kupp can start seeing their value rise.
Week 2
Higbee caught a short pass over the middle of the field for 8 yards in the 2nd quarter of Sunday’s game against the Colts. And that was it. One catch on 1 target.

QB Matt Stafford threw for 278 yards and 2 scores in this one. But WR Cooper Kupp hogged the production, accounting for 163 yards and both of the TDs. WR Robert Woods caught 5 balls for 63 yards. No other Ram reached 30 receiving yards.

The passing-game production figures to be more spread going forward. And Higbee’s playing time remained excellent in Week 2. He was on the field for every single offensive snap and ran a pass route on 25 of Stafford’s 32 drop backs (78%).

If those rates continue, Higbee is a strong bet for a top 8 fantasy season -- especially considering how good this passing game looks.

Higbee is a prime buy-low candidate ahead of a great stretch of upcoming matchups: Bucs, Cardinals, Seahawks, Giants, Lions, Texans and Titans.
Week 1
Higbee caught Matt Stafford’s first pass as a Ram to open the game and continued to show a good rapport with his new QB throughout the game. Higbee finished second on the team with 6 targets, bringing in 5 catches for 68 yards. It appears Higbee could be the #2 option in this high-flying offense under Stafford and HC Sean McVay. Higbee was used underneath and on deep crossing routes and Stafford seemed comfortable looking for him on any down and distance.
This offseason was a good one for Higbee, bringing Stafford to town and Gerald Everett leaving. With Everett gone, Higbee is primed for a big year. Higbee could see another big performance this week against a Colts defense that just gave up over 50 yards and a TD to TEs in Week 1. We have Higbee ranked at TE8 this week against Indianapolis. Fire him up in your lineups with confidence. We believe Higbee is going to continue to put up respectable numbers in this potent offense and have him ranked at TE8 the rest of the season.

What You Need to Know:

  • Higbee posted a 44-521-5 line in 15 games last year. He missed Week 7 with a hand injury.
  • He finished 24th among TEs in PPR points per game; 17th in non-PPR.
  • 22.5% of his PPR production came in a 3-TD outing vs. the Eagles in Week 2.
  • Higbee had 1 other top-5 weekly finish but scored as a top-12 TE in just 3 of his 15 outings. That rate of 20% ranked just 29th at the position.
  • Higbee was efficient last year. Among 35 TEs with 40+ targets, Higbee ranked …
    • 5th in yards per target
    • 7th in yards per route run
    • 15th in Pro Football Focus’ receiving grades
  • Higbee shared TE duties with Gerald Everett last year. In their 15 games together, Higbee out-targeted Everett 60 to 57. Higbee ran 322 pass routes to Everett’s 266.
  • Everett signed with the Seahawks in free agency. The only addition the Rams made at TE was 4th-round rookie Jacob Harris. 2020 4th-rounder Brycen Hopkins and blocker Johnny Mundt return.
  • Higbee should soak up a big chunk of the 62 total targets Everett leaves behind.
    • Rams TEs totaled just 88 and 85 targets in HC Sean McVay’s first 2 seasons. That’s climbed to 156 and 126 the past 2 years. Expect something between those 2 extremes in 2021.
  • We saw Higbee for 5 games without Everett back in 2019. The results were massive, with Higbee posting the following lines:
    • 7-107-1
    • 7-116
    • 12-111
    • 9-104
    • 8-84-1
  • He led all TEs in PPR and non-PPR points over that stretch.
  • The Rams got a likely QB upgrade this offseason, going from Jared Goff to Matt Stafford. Stafford has earned a higher Pro Football Focus passing grade than Goff in 2 straight seasons and 3 of the last 4.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Higbee was a fantasy disappointment last year because he shared TE duties with Gerald Everett.

Everett is gone now. And when we got Higbee without Everett for 5 games back in 2019, Higbee led all TEs in fantasy points.

He also gets a likely QB upgrade this season, with the Rams going from Jared Goff to Matt Stafford.

Add it all up and Higbee is a good bet for TE1 production -- with a ceiling that climbs into the top 5.
