The Bills have fired HC Sean McDermott, according to multiple reports. McDermott spent nine seasons at the helm in Buffalo, 98-50 in the regular season with just one non-winning campaign: 6-10 back in 2018, his second year. Each of his other eight Bills teams reached the playoffs. Five straight won the AFC East before this year's club finished second behind the Patriots. McDermott's Bills went 8-8 in the playoffs, winning at least one game each of the past six seasons.
What They're Saying
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo: "Players thought this might be the case after a heartwrenching loss to the Broncos."
Fantasy Football Impact
The ouster of McDermott himself probably doesn't mean a whole lot for the fantasy outlooks on QB Josh Allen, RB James Cook, and other key Bills fantasy assets -- especially because McDermott's background is defense.
But the change likely means a whole new staff, and OC Joe Brady has fielded HC interviews already this hiring season.
We'll see who Buffalo chooses to replace the outgoing staff before projecting impact. One potentially helpful aspect for Allen: Perhaps the new staff moves away from the "everybody eats" passing-game mantra that Brady has espoused since the team traded away WR Stefon Diggs.
From my vantage point, this offense has displayed the need for such a player ever since -- especially given how heavily it relies on its QB to make plays.
