Broncos QB Bo Nix underwent a second procedure on his surgically repaired right ankle, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The “clean-up” surgery was performed last week in Birmingham, AL, by Dr. Norman Waldrop III, who also handled the initial procedure on January 19.
What They're Saying
Rapoport: "So basically, a little bit of a kind of a clean-out, just make sure it was healthy, get some stuff out of there," Rapoport told Pat McAfee on Wednesday. "When he had it most recently examined, after the fractured ankle, they thought, 'All right, maybe there's going to be another surgery, just to make sure it's healing properly, to clean some stuff up.' So that's what happened. You're not going to see him very much at OTAs or minicamp."

Rapoport also indicated that this follow-up surgery was “successful and anticipated.”
Nix fractured his ankle in the fourth quarter of Denver’s 33-30 Divisional Round win over Buffalo. After the game, HC Sean Payton confirmed Nix would miss the remainder of the postseason.
The initial diagnosis was that Nix would make a full recovery and miss 4-6 weeks.
In March, GM George Paton said Nix was “ahead of schedule” and expected to be ready for OTAs. Denver’s voluntary OTAs run June 2–4 and 8–11, with mandatory minicamp set for June 16–18.
HC Sean Payton echoed that optimism, saying, “He had a scheduled recheck. He’s doing great. We’re excited about his progress. Nothing to report.”
Although the second procedure is just now being reported, the team does not appear concerned about Nix’s availability for the 2026 season.
The Broncos are scheduled to report for their offseason conditioning program on May 4.
The team will likely take a cautious approach with its franchise QB. Nix is not expected to participate in on-field drills until OTAs at the earliest. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger sit behind him on the depth chart.
For now, the procedure is worth noting, but it’s not expected to impact Nix’s Week 1 availability. Nix has played all 34 of his regular-season games since being drafted 12th overall in 2024.
He remains in the second tier of QB targets, coming in at QB13 in our 2026 half-PPR rankings.
Nix also checks in as QB13 in our dynasty rankings.
