Panthers WR Chris Brazzell suffered a "moderate" LCL tear in his left knee Wednesday, according to multiple reports. He's expected to miss "up to eight weeks." Brazzell is headed for a second opinion. The third-round rookie had missed two practices earlier in the week because of soreness in the same knee.
What They're Saying: Impact Goes Beyond Brazzell
HC Dave Canales just before camp, when asked about playing Tetairoa McMillan in the slot more: "We used him a lot in there last year as well. So we'll just continue that plan. Chris Brazzell gives us the opportunity to move him inside a little bit more. We can pop T-Mac inside, put Chris at the single. When you have somebody that tall and fast sitting on the single side with the one-on-one matchup, that gives us an advantage. Maybe the defense tilts that way a little bit; it creates a little bit of space inside."
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: It Matters But Doesn't Lower McMillan
Brazzell has been competing with former first-round pick Xavier Legette for the No. 3 WR role, with Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker locked in as the top two.
The quote above matters for a couple of reasons:
- It indicates that Canales prefers Brazzell over his other options in the "X" role, running deep routes on the left side.
- If the coach believes Brazzell's presence helps the McMillan slot plan, then there's a chance that happens less while Brazzell's out.
Why should we care whether McMillan's in the slot or outside? Playing the slot more could increase the second-year WR's target share and help his catch rate, with more shorter- to mid-level targets.
The timetable for Brazzell makes it seem unlikely that he'll be ready for Week 1, which begins six weeks from this writing. We'll see what that means for the offensive design.
Brazzell shouldn't be in your fantasy plans in common-sized leagues even if healthy. We're not adjusting our expectations for McMillan at this point either. Our ranking for the second-year Panther already sits later than his market price by consensus ADP.
Other Winners & Losers: Legette Still Looks Like Both
The biggest "winner" here is clearly Legette, who should now be the favorite for that No. 3 role. That doesn't make him a worthwhile fantasy target, though. The wideout already declined from Year 1 to Year 2 in:
- targets per game
- catches per game
- catch rate
- receiving success rate
And that all came despite a slight boost in route share.
An extended absence for Brazzell would also likely hurt QB Bryce Young. The downfield element can only help the offense. Even if the QB struggles to hit such opportunities, the speed and threat would help to create space for shorter routes and targets.
