Fernando Mendoza Headshot

Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza was sharp in his preseason debut vs. the Cardinals on Thursday night, completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INTs. But QB Kirk Cousins got the start and is still the favorite to open the regular season as Vegas' starter, HC Klint Kubiak confirmed after the game.

What They're Saying

Kubiak: "Kirk’s been getting the reps with the ones. I think he’s had a solid training camp and it’s his job to lose."

Kubiak on Mendoza: “He led a good scoring drive. As far as getting in and out of the huddle, commanding the group, getting the play calls down, I saw the same guy I see in practice. I saw an ascending player who’s got to keep getting better.”

2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Cousins Now, Mendoza Later

Cousins played well vs. Arizona, too, going 5 of 6 for 50 yards and a score to TE Michael Mayer on his only possession.

Mendoza has had some growing pains learning a new offense in training camp, but he's impressed with his leadership, football acumen, and ability to learn from mistakes. His preseason showing suggests he's starting to settle into his new digs.

Cousins will be under center for the regular-season opener vs. the Dolphins, but we're still expecting to see Mendoza sooner rather than later. We currently project Cousins to play the first four games and Mendoza the final 13.

Still, the rookie is only draftable as a QB3 in superflex and best ball leagues.

Other Winners & Losers: Arrow Up On Bowers And Jeanty

The solid showing from both QBs on Thursday night is promising for TE Brock Bowers and RB Ashton Jeanty. Vegas should get better QB play -- and better play calling from Kubiak -- this year than last.
