C.J. Anderson Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman suffered a left foot injury in the 1st half of Sunday's game.  He's on the sidelines but has not re-entered.  C.J. Anderson is operating as Denver's lead back.

Update: Hillman returned for the start of the 2nd half.

Broncos QB Peyton Manning made it clear that Ronnie Hillman will step in as the lead back with Montee Ball out.  "We're counting on him," Manning said.  Hillman probably won't have a long leash if he struggles.  And he'll likely lose short-yardage and goal-line carries to C.J. Anderson and/or Juwan Thompson.  But for now, Hillman is the best fantasy bet in Denver's Ball-less backfield.  A matchup with a stingy Jets defense leaves Hillman as more of a RB3 or flex play for Week 6.

Broncos RB C.J. Anderson left Thursday night's preseason opener early after sustaining a concussion.  He'll need to pass through the league's protocol before returning.  Any missed time for Anderson can only help to further solidify Ronnie Hillman as the #2 behind Montee Ball.

With Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendectomy) sidelined, RB Ronnie Hillman received "most" of the carries with the 1st-team offense on Monday, per insider Jeff Legwold.  RB C.J. Anderson mixed in for a "smattering" of reps with the starters.  It's more confirmation that Hillman is ahead of Anderson on the depth chart.  Built like a change-of-pace back at 5'10 and 195 pounds, Hillman could mix in for 6-10 touches per game behind Ball.  If the starter goes down, though, we'd likely see a committee attack with Hillman and Anderson.

Broncos insider Jeff Legwold confirmed to Draft Sharks that RB Ronnie Hillman is firmly ahead of RB C.J. Anderson for the team's #2 job. "I believe he is and that's how they've rotated through work in practice thus far as well," Legwold wrote.  He suggests that Anderson is in a tighter battle just to make the team as the 3rd RB.  Hillman has been mostly disappointing through 2 pro seasons, averaging 3.9 yards per carry and struggling with ball-security and pass protection.  But there's still time for the former 3rd-rounder to carve out a change-of-pace role behind starter Montee Ball.  Hillman is worth considering as a bench stash late in fantasy drafts.  We just updated our projections for the Broncos backfield.

Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has "usually" been running as the #2 RB early in camp, according to insider Andrew Mason.  RB C.J. Anderson has widely been considered the favorite to win the backup job behind Montee Ball, but it sounds like Hillman is #2 on the depth chart right now.  "He's quicker and more decisive when there's a hole in front of him," Mason says of Hillman.  The battle for the #2 job in Denver is worth tracking closely.  The winner could see 100+ touches and would be a fantasy starter if Ball goes down.

RB Knowshon Moreno is fully expected to depart Denver in free agency.  RB Montee Ball is expected to take over as the Broncos' lead back.  But who steps in as the #2, change-of-pace RB?  Beat writer Mike Klis believes C.J. Anderson is the favorite.  An undrafted rookie this past year, Anderson did enough to stick around on the active roster and bypassed Ronnie Hillman on the depth chart by midseason.  He finished the year with 7 carries for 38 yards -- plus another 9 yards on 2 Super-Bowl totes.  HC John Fox has always preferred a 2-back attack, so Anderson will certainly be worth monitoring this summer.  If nothing else, he'll be a strong handcuff for Ball owners.

The Denver Post reports that undrafted rookie RB C.J. Anderson is expected to take over RB Ronnie Hillman's role in the Denver backfield this week.  Hillman lost a costly fumble near the goal line in the loss to the Colts and will be benched in Week 8.  Anderson, meanwhile, has been sidelined ever since a knee injury early in the preseason.  He has been practicing for a while and looks like an intriguing short-yardage threat at 5'8, 224 pounds.  Moreno's 2 major knee surgeries the past 2 years adds upside to anyone who can emerge as a complement.
