QB Colin Kaepernick has opted out of his contract and is now a free agent, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Kaep is passing on a $16.9 million 2017 salary and betting on himself. We'll see if it pays off. The Broncos were reportedly interested in Kaepernick last offseason and still have question marks at QB. The Jets are another potential suitor. And a return to San Francisco might still be on the table. Considering the state of the QB position around the league, Kaep actually has a pretty good shot to get another chance as a starter this season.

To the surprise of no one, the 49ers on Monday officially named Kyle Shanahan their new HC. Shanahan, of course, remained Atlanta's OC until their Super Bowl loss to the Patriots, but his move had been rumored for the past few weeks. It also seems like a natural ascension for the son of longtime NFL HC Mike Shanahan who served as OC under Gary Kubiak back in Houston before filling the same role under his father in Washington and then with Cleveland and the Falcons. Kyle Shanahan's 2016 Atlanta offense led the league in scoring by 4.4 points per game and yards per play (6.7) while also tying for the league's fewest turnovers. The Falcons ranked 7th in yards but just 21st in scoring in 2015. Overall, 6 of the 9 offenses Shanahan has coordinated finished 9th or higher in total pass attempts. Just 2 finished higher than 12th in rushing attempts. We'll see how his Niners offense shapes up. The surest thing looks like RB Carlos Hyde. The starting QB might not even be on the roster yet. Colin Kaepernick's likely to get cut, as he faces a $19.3 million cap number, including a $14.5 million salary that becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster April 1. Blaine Gabbert's headed for unrestricted free agency.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick struggled for the 2nd straight week, mustering only 133 yards and 1 TD. His day started strong with a short-range TD pass to Carlos Hyde, yet he proved sporadic after the opening drive. He avoided a turnover but averaged just 5.1 YPA on 15 of 26 passing vs. the Jets’ underwhelming secondary. Kaepernick added only 23 yards on 3 carries. He won't be a reccomended QB1 next week at Atlanta.

49ers OC Curtis Modkins confirmed on Tuesday that QB Colin Kaepernick will start against the Jets this weekend. Kaep was yanked this past Sunday after completing just 1 of 5 passes and taking 5 sacks. He'd finished as a top 10 fantasy QB in 4 straight weeks prior to that, setting him up as the ultimate risk/reward Week 14 fantasy play.

49ers HC Chip Kelly said after Sunday's game against the Bears that QB Colin Kaepernick's benching is "not anything permanent." Kaep took 5 sacks in the loss and completed just 1 of 5 passes for 4 yards. QB Blaine Gabbert wasn't much better, going 4-of-10 for 35 yards with 1 sack. Kaepernick, of course, was a fantasy stud over the previous 6 games. He'll be tough to trust in Week 14, but there remains QB1 upside here.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was benched in 2nd half of Sunday's game in Chicago. He had completed just 1 of 5 pass attempts for 4 yards -- and taken 5 sacks. The 'Niners had negative 21 net passing yards when Kaep exited. He's been replaced by QB Blaine Gabbert.

Snow is expected throughout today's 49ers-Bears game, accumulating to 3-5 inches. Winds will be at just 5-7 mph, though, so we're not downgrading the passing games. Of course, both offenses figure to go run-heavy anyway.

49ers HC Chip Kelly announced Monday that QB Colin Kaepernick will start the team's Week 7 matchup with the Bucs. That doesn't come as a surprise, but it's noteworthy after Kelly refused to name Kaep the next game's starter following Sunday's loss in Buffalo. Kaepernick continues to sport plenty of real-life issues on the field, but his combo of a strong throwing arm, rare mobility and Kelly's offense will always give him fantasy upside. A matchup with a soft Bucs D will only add to that.

49ers HC Chip Kelly announced on Tuesday that QB Colin Kaepernick will start this weekend's game against the Bills. QB Blaine Gabbert was never a good bet to last the season. He's completed 58% of his passes, averaged 5.9 yards per attempt and was picked off 6 times in 5 games. Kaepernick wasn't any better the last time we saw him in regular-season action about 11 months ago. And he completed just 54% of his passes in 2 preseason games this summer. But his rushing ability could turn him into an option at least in 2-QB leagues. Gabbert averaged 7.8 carries and 34.4 rushing yards in his 5 starts. Kaepernick is a bigger threat on the ground.

Niners HC Chip Kelly confirmed Monday that QB Blaine Gabbert remains his starter -- in case anyone was unsure after Gabbert started the 1st 3 games. But Kelly stopped short of deeming Gabbert's role undisputed. Per CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, Kelly said about QB Colin Kaepernick: “Kap is our No. 2 right now and everybody wants to know why Kap isn’t our No. 1. I don’t think Kap is 100 percent right now." So, he's not the starter right now because he's not fully healthy? Given Gabbert's continued lackluster play, we certainly wouldn't be surprised if Kelly's toying with the idea of making a switch. There's no move to be made in most fantasy football leagues here, but deep-league owners -- and especially those in 2-QB and superflex formats -- should take notice. If you have a spot to play with on a deep roster, Kaep could be worth stashing. His combo of rushing ability, a strong (albeit erratic) arm and Chip Kelly's high-volume offense could present some spot-start value.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, 49ers HC Chip Kelly announced Saturday that QB Blaine Gabbert will start the team's regular-season opener. Gabbert has held the edge since spring practice, when Colin Kaepernick sat out following multiple offseason surgeries. Gabbert's mobile enough to be an interesting DFS and 2-QB league consideration simply because of Kelly's history with QB fantasy production in Philly. But no one should be getting excited about Gabbert and (arguably?) the league's worst WR corps. Kelly added that Kaepernick with be the backup, making Christian Ponder the 3rd QB.

49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will start the team's preseason opener on Sunday night, per insider John McClain. QB Colin Kaepernick is dealing with what HC Chip Kelly deemed "arm fatigue" but is still expected to play this weekend. As we've been hearing all offseason, Gabbert appears to be in the lead in this QB derby. We'll see what preseason action brings.

49ers HC Chip Kelly said Sunday that 1st-team reps will be "split right down the middle" between QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick. The San Francisco media believes Gabbert is the favorite to win the starting job, but this confirms that the competition is still open. Kaepernick certainly has the ability to beat out Gabbert if he can rediscover early-career form. The winner of this competition will have spot-start appeal in Kelly's fast-paced offense.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has been cleared by his doctor for the start of training camp, per insider Matt Barrows. He still needs to receive clearance from the team. Kaep had surgery on his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee this offseason. He missed all of spring workouts, putting him behind QB Blaine Gabbert on the depth chart. But a healthy Kaepernick is still capable of winning this starting job. Gabbert is his competition, after all.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) admitted that he’s fallen behind in his competition with Blaine Gabbert. "I'm in a situation where I'm a little bit behind," he said, "because I am rehabbing to get back to 100 percent where I can start training. So, at this point, there's a lot of work to be done.” Kaepernick’s expected to gain full medical clearance prior to or shortly after the start of training camp. In the weeks leading up to camp, he’s focused on regaining muscle mass. Gabbert remains the favorite to start Week 1 vs. Los Angeles.

NFL Network's Michael Silver believes Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" to win the 49ers' starting QB job.  "He's loved in this locker room," Silver added. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener."  Gabbert set career highs in completion rate (63.1%) and yards per attempt (7.2) in 2015, while tossing 10 TDs vs. 7 INTs.  He's been soaking up 1st-team reps this spring while QB Colin Kaepernick rehabs from multiple surgeries.  The winner of San Francisco's QB battle could have spot-start appeal in HC Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense.

49ers OC Curtis Modkins admits that he has "no idea" when QB Colin Kaepernick will be cleared to practice.  He's still sidelined after undergoing offseason surgeries on his shoulder, knee and thumb.  QB Blaine Gabbert has been soaking up 1st-team reps in HC Chip Kelly's offense in the meantime.  There's a real chance Gabbert is under center come Week 1.

It sounds like 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is taking advantage of Colin Kaepernick's absence from the practice field so far this spring. “Whoever’s at quarterback needs to take control and be our leader out there. And he’s definitely doing that," TE Garrett Celek told CSN Bayarea's Matt Maiocco last week. "He’s making good decisions on the field. I think he’s definitely developing more and more as the days go on." Kaepernick's getting over offseason surgeries to his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee. He has reportedly started throwing some and is expected to be cleared to return to practice by early June. Gabbert, meanwhile, is getting a headstart in learning the new offense. We'll see how much of an advantage that proves to be this summer. Those drafting in best-ball formats right now would do well to avoid the San Francisco QB situation altogether.

49ers insider Matt Barrows confirms that QB Colin Kaepernick is all but assured of sticking in San Francisco this season.  A draft-week trade never materialized, and the Niners didn't add another QB until taking project Jeff Driskel in the 6th round.  That leaves Kaep to duke it out with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.  It's a battle Kaepernick should win as long as he's healthy.  He had surgeries on his thumb, knee and shoulder this offseason.  The shoulder issue was the most serious, but Kaep has reportedly resumed throwing "a bit," per Barrows, and expects to receive full clearance by the end of May.

According to CBS' Jason La Canfora, 49ers HC Chip Kelly is "more enamored with trying to resurrect Blaine Gabbert's career" than picking a QB in Round 1 of the upcoming NFL Draft. That's a convenient bit of news now that the Rams-Titans trade has made it all the more likely the top 2 QBs will leave the board by the time the Niners pick at 7. Of course, the unspoken portion of this report concerns Colin Kaepernick. Gabbert played decently down the stretch last year, but Kaepernick remains the higher-paid and more talented player. His strained relationship with San Francisco management, however, might be beyond repair. We'll see how this situation -- and the related Broncos QB situation -- plays out in the coming weeks.
