Ravens HC John Harbaugh said Monday that TE Crockett Gillmore (calf) has a "chance" to return for this weekend's game against the Browns.  Baltimore could certainly use him with WRs Steve Smith and Michael Campanaro out.  If Gillmore suits up, he'd get a Cleveland defense that just allowed 2 TDs to Chargers TEs this past week.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh announced Tuesday that TE Dennis Pitta (hip) will begin the season on the PUP list, costing him the first 6 games.  His availability beyond that remains in question.  We haven't heard much in the way of progress on Pitta's attempted return from last year's severe hip injury.  He's off the fantasy radar.  Crockett Gillmore and Maxx Williams will open the season as Baltimore's top 2 TEs.

Mike Preston of The Baltimore Sun writes that Ravens TE Crockett Gillmore "has had a strong camp" and that he "looks and plays the part of a starter." Preston corroborates previous reports that Gillmore appears to have added at least 15-20 pounds to a frame that was 6'6 and 250 pounds last year. QB Joe Flacco has reportedly targeted him often in the red zone, and Preston believes Gillmore is set to be a "major weapon" in the offense. Of course, a writer's definition of such a role doesn't necessarily point to huge fantasy football value. But there's opportunity in Baltimore, where WR Steve Smith enters 2015 as the only proven receiving option outside of the backfield. We'll be interested to see Gillmore in preseason action. His buzz also underscores the quiet camp of 2nd-round rookie TE Maxx Williams.

Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) is expected to open the season on the PUP list, according to insider Aaron Wilson.  That'd cost him the first 6 games.  His availability beyond that remains in doubt.  Pitta has made "significant progress" in his rehab from his 2nd fractured and dislocated hip, per Wilson, but it's still "unclear" whether he'll ever play again.  He's more than 10 months removed from the hip injury and still hasn't been medically cleared.  There's no reason to spend a draft pick on Pitta this summer.  Baltimore will open the season with Maxx Williams and Crockett Gillmore atop the TE depth chart.

Ravens insider Aaron Wilson considers Crockett Gillmore the "likely candidate to start because he’s the closest thing that the Ravens have to a two-way tight end."  Last year's 3rd-round pick caught just 10 balls for 121 yards as a rookie but graded out well as a receiver and blocker according to Pro Football Focus.  That 2-way game figures to earn him plenty of playing time this season.  Expect Gillmore to spend the majority of his time blocking, though, so he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset.  But it's a reminder not to overrate TE Maxx Williams in 2015 redraft leagues.  The rookie figures to operate as Baltimore's primary pass-catching TE, but he'll share targets with Gillmore and potentially Dennis Pitta.

The Ravens traded up to select TE Maxx Williams with the 55th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.  The Minnesota product didn't put up big college numbers on a run-heavy offense, but he's a 6'4, 249-pounder with above average athleticism.  Williams has a huge catch radius and velcro hands.  Baltimore is an ideal landing spot.  TE Dennis Pitta's career is in jeopardy after 2 major hip injuries, and TE Crockett Gillmore is more of a blocker.  Williams could immediately step in as the lead pass-catching TE in new OC Marc Trestman's offense.  We'd only consider him a spot starter for 2015, but there's plenty of long-term upside here.
