Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is active for tonight's game against the Chargers.  He should continue to serve as San Diego's early down back, ceding to RB Danny Woodhead in passing situations.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is probable for Monday night's game against the Colts.  He practiced on Friday and Saturday and seems to have been cleared for game action.   "I'm looking forward to seeing him out there," HC Mike McCoy said.  Mathews will continue to serve as San Diego's primary early-down back, ceding to Danny Woodhead in passing situations.  Mathews is a low-upside fantasy option against Indy's 8th-ranked RB defense.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has yet to be cleared from Sunday night's concussion.  He has an extra day with San Diego playing on Monday night, but consider him questionable at best for that 1.  If Mathews is out, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown would split backfield duties.  The Chargers would figure to go with a pass-heavy attack.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews took a knee to the helmet in the 2nd quarter of Sunday night's game.  He was diagnosed with a concussion.  Mathews finished with just 8 yards on 3 carries.  The good news is that this is his 1st NFL concussion.  And he has an extra day to get ready for next Monday night's game against the Colts.  But Mathews should still be considered questionable for that 1.  Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown would share backfield duties if Mathews can't go.

Chargers insider Michael Gehlken says the team wants RB Danny Woodhead to fill the role RB Darren Sproles played from 2005-2010. That's Sproles the Charger, not Sproles the Saint.  While he's emerged as a PPR dynamo in New Orleans, Sproles wasn't quite as busy in San Diego.  In his final 4 seasons with the Chargers, he averaged 60 carries and 36 catches. His single-season highs were 93 carries (2009) and 59 catches (2010). Consider those marks Woodhead's ceilings in 2013.  Sproles was a top-30 PPR RB in his final 2 seasons in San Diego, though.  Woodhead could be a RB3 or flex option for your PPR squad this year.  Click here to see our current projections for Woodhead.

Chargers HC Mike McCoy made it clear that he'll use multiple RBs this season. “I’ve been raised with (Denver HC) John Fox in this league,” McCoy said.  “We always played with a couple of backs. It doesn’t matter who’s in there. Keep them fresh. That’s the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll. If you’ve got to tap out for a play or two, we’ll put the next guy in.”  The question now becomes just how much RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown will eat into Ryan Mathews' workload.  Brown is well past his prime and shouldn't see more than a handful of touches per game.  But Woodhead is a top-notch pass-catching RB.  He figures to put a significant dent in Mathews' receiving production.  At just 5'8 and 200 pounds, though, Woodhead is too small to turn this into a true 50-50 committee.  We'll continue to keep an eye on McCoy's backfield plans.  We're not moving Mathews or Woodhead in our RB rankings right now.

In attendance at Chargers minicamp this week, ESPN's Bill Williamson notes RB Danny Woodhead versatility and says he'll "be a part of a lot of packages in the offense."  RB Ryan Mathews is a productive pass-catcher but has struggled as a blocker.  RB Ronnie Brown doesn't offer much playmaking ability at this point of his career.  Woodhead, meanwhile, has caught 92 balls over the past 3 years and finished 10th among RBs in Pro Football Focus' 2012 pass-blocking rankings.  He could settle in as the Chargers' primary pass-catching back and accrue RB3 or flex value in PPR fantasy leagues.

The Chargers have signed RB Danny Woodhead to a 2-year deal.  The 5'8, 195-pounder is just a change-of-pace guy on the ground, but he's a top-notch receiver out of the backfield.  Woodhead has racked up 92 catches over the past 3 seasons in New England.  He'll likely step into a similar role with the Bolts.  If Woodhead is the only RB San Diego brings in this offseason, it'll be good news for RB Ryan Mathews.  Meanwhile, the Pats are left with Shane Vereen and Leon Washington behind Stevan Ridley.  Our money is on Vereen capturing the pass-catching role, which would put him squarely on the fantasy radar in PPR leagues.

5:16pm EST 1/20/13

As expected, RB Danny Woodhead is active for tonight's clash with the Ravens. The Pats have no significant inactives for fantasy purposes.

Patriots injury reports usually consist of about 82 players listed as questionable. But Danny Woodhead and Chandler Jones are among the 5 guys listed as probable for Sunday's AFC title matchup with Baltimore. And that's it. Nice of them to finally clear things up for any fantasy owners still playing. Jones' ankle has been enough of a question mark that he reportedly wouldn't even reveal his status to his brother Arthur, who plays for the Ravens. That's certainly no shock coming out of Foxboro.

Patriots RB Danny Woodhead (thumb) graduated to a full practice on Thursday.  It's confirmation that he'll play against the Ravens this weekend -- and that the thumb shouldn't be an issue.  What's unclear if what kind of role Woodhead will play after RB Shane Vereen's breakout performance last week.

Patriots RB Danny Woodhead (thumb) put in a limited practice on Wednesday.  Early-week reports had him likely to play against the Ravens this Sunday, and he's off to a good start.  It's fair to wonder how that thumb injury will impact Woodhead's pass-catching ability though.  He's also likely to lose more snaps to RB Shane Vereen.

The thumb injury Patriots RB Danny Woodhead suffered on Sunday isn't expected to keep him out of the AFC Championship Game this weekend.  But Woodhead might have been leap-frogged on the depth chart by the impressive Shane Vereen.  As always with the Pats, we won't know how the backfield will shake out until the game gets underway.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen has been mostly invisible since being selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft.  He was plenty visible in the team's playoff win over the Texans on Sunday.  With RB Danny Woodhead exiting early on with a thumb injury, Vereen stepped into the pass-catching role.  He finished with 5 grabs for 83 yards and 2 TDs, tacking on another 41 yards and a score on the ground.  Vereen displayed WR-like route-running in the passing game while often lining up outside the numbers.  That was the case on his 33-yard TD, when he simply ran past LB Barrett Ruud.  Vereen was also productive on the ground, averaging 5.9 yards per carry.  Stevan Ridley is still the lead back in New England's traditional offense -- he finished with 15 carries on Sunday.  But Vereen certainly brings more play-making ability as the no-huddle back than Danny Woodhead.  We'll see about Woodhead's injury, but Vereen will be the better fantasy bet against the Ravens this coming weekend.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans.  He didn't practice at all this week, and there's no timetable for his return.  Meanwhile, Stevan Ridley is now locked in as the lead back this weekend.  He's a strong fantasy option against what looks like a leaky Titans run defense.  RB Danny Woodhead figures to play on passing downs but isn't a recommended fantasy starter.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen has yet to practice since injuring his foot in the preseason finale.  Reports out of New England had the injury as minor, but you never know with the Pats.  Consider Vereen questionable for Week 1.  RB Stevan Ridley would get a slight boost if Vereen can't go.  It'd also lock RB Danny Woodhead into the pass-catching role.

RB Stevan Ridley has emerged as the Patriots' lead back -- at least for now.  But it sounds like RB Shane Vereen will play a significant role on passing downs.  He's received a lot of reps on passing plays in camp, according to insider Jeff Howe.  "Vereen runs good routes for a running back, and he has shown off some nice hands while making a few difficult catches," Howe writes.  "Vereen has developed a good rapport with quarterback Tom Brady, who obviously has plenty of targets, but it’s clear that Brady will go in Vereen’s direction with his check-downs."  New England has produced some big-time receiving numbers at RB in recent years.  In fact, 2011 was the first season in 6 years that the Pats didn't have a RB catch at least 34 balls.  If Vereen can beat out Danny Woodhead for passing-down duties, he'll carry RB3 or flex appeal in PPR formats.  And there's always a chance that HC Bill Belichick flip-flops and goes with Vereen as the lead back at some point this season.  We still like the Cal product at his 13th-round ADP.

Reports out of Patriots camp have RB Stevan Ridley seeing most of the 1st-team reps.  RB Shane Vereen has mixed in, mostly on passing plays.  RB Danny Woodhead has been in his usual 3rd-down role.  It's still early, and we know New England's backfield usage can change from game to game.  But as of now, it looks like Ridley will be the early-down pounder, a la BenJarvus Green-Ellis.  Vereen could be used as the primary change-of-pace and pass-catching back, with Woodhead also seeing action in passing situations.  Ridley remains the best bet for production, but he'll be tough to rely on from week to week.  We're not falling over ourselves to grab him at his current 7.11 ADP.  We'd rather take a shot on Vereen at 13.06.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley is a healthy scratch for today's game against the Ravens.  He finished the regular season strong, but a fumble last week landed him in HC Bill Belichick's doghouse.  RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis will handle the early-down work, with RB Danny Woodhead subbing in on passing downs.  WR Chad Ochocinco is also inactive today.  He missed practice time this week to attend his father's funeral.
