Darrius Heyward-Bey Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (groin) ended up being listed as probable on the Week 3 injury report.  It was previously reported that he'd be a game-time decision, but the team is obviously confident he'll play against the 49ers on Sunday.  Between a tough matchup and the return of WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Hilton is a risk/reward WR3 in fantasy.

Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (shoulder) practiced on Wednesday.  It's confirmation that he'll be ready for this weekend's game against the 49ers.  Theoretically, it's bad news for WR T.Y. Hilton.  But it's tough to imagine the Colts sticking with Heyward-Bey as the #2 WR after Hilton's breakout game last week.  Consider him a risk/reward WR3.  DHB isn't a fantasy option.

An MRI on Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey's injured shoulder came back clean.  He's expected to be ready to practice by Wednesday or Thursday.  Barring a setback, he'll play against the 49ers this weekend.  We can only hope that the Colts continue to roll with T.Y. Hilton as their #2 WR after his breakout game against the Dolphins.

Updating a previous item, Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was knocked out of Sunday's game with a shoulder injury.  He'll undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.  We should learn more tomorrow.  DHB's biggest fantasy impact so far has been limiting WR T.Y. Hilton's snaps.  Hilton exploded after Heyward-Bey left Sunday's game and will be an every-week fantasy starter as long as DHB is out.

Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey left in the 3rd quarter of Sunday's game with a rib injury.  His return is being called questionable.  We'll update his status when we learn more.  T.Y. Hilton will be an every-down WR as long as Heyward-Bey is sidelined.

Colts HC Chuck Pagano admits that the team needs to get WR T.Y. Hilton more "plays and touches" going forward.  Hilton played just 26 of 57 offensive snaps against the Raiders in Week 1, finishing with 3 catches on 5 targets.  But Pagano didn't say that Hilton would move past WR Darrius Heyward-Bey into the starting lineup.  Until that happens, Hilton will be a boom-or-bust WR3 in fantasy.  We like his "boom" potential this weekend against a burnable Dolphins secondary.

Despite T.Y. Hilton's impressive preseason, Darrius Heyward-Bey remains the Colts' #2 WR.  The team likes having the 6'2, 219-pound DHB on the field in 2-WR sets because he's a better run-blocker than Hilton.  In 3-WR looks, Reggie Wayne will usually move into the slot, with Hilton joining Heyward-Bey outside the numbers.  The limited playing time figures to make Hilton's game-to-game production a bit erratic.  But his upside makes him a fine WR3 for your fantasy football team.  Heyward-Bey, meanwhile, could also emerge as a weekly WR3.  He's a value pick at his 12th-round ADP.

Colts WR T.Y. Hilton hauled in a 45-yard TD in the team's preseason opener Sunday.  He finished with 3 catches for 61 yards.  It's worth noting that Hilton only played in 3-WR sets with the starting offense.  Reggie Wayne and Darrius Heyward-Bey were the top 2 WRs.  Hilton has had an impressive camp, though, and continued to flash on Sunday.  We're expecting him to pass DHB on the depth chart before Week 1.  Target Hilton as a WR3 with upside.

Guess we can stop worrying about Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and his knee.  The 5th-year wideout returned to the field for Indy's Tuesday night practice.  DHB took part in position drills before sitting out team drills.  That's not a full return, but it's a lot better than the early prognosis of an MCL sprain.  Look for him to resume running with the starters soon -- unless WR T.Y. Hilton really takes advantage of Heyward-Bey's downtime.  We'll keep watching this battle.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen updated the story on Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey Tuesday, reporting that DHB does not in fact have a sprained MCL in his injured left knee.  That obviously makes the injury less serious than original reports claimed.  Mortensen added that Heyward-Bey is actually "day-to-day" instead of out indefinitely.  It's good news for the 5th-year pro, who could be back on the field later this week.  WR T.Y. Hilton is still the better fantasy bet over the course of the season.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL.  He went down in practice on Sunday.  "He's definitely gonna miss a lot of time here," Mort added.  Sprained MCLs usually cost players at least a couple weeks.  DHB appears questionable for the start of the season now.  This should be all T.Y. Hilton needs to lock down the #2 WR spot.

Colts OC Pep Hamilton talked up WR T.Y. Hilton on Monday.  "He’s probably one of the more instinctive players that we have on our offense," Hamilton said. "He just has a knack for making big plays. We got to find ways to get the ball in T.Y.’s hands and he’ll do the rest ... He’s a special player and we expect that he will continue to be special.”   Darrius Heyward-Bey's recent knee injury might be all Hilton needs to take the #2 WR job and run with it.  His 7 TDs in his 2012 rookie campaign were more than DHB has managed in any of his 4 seasons.

Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was diagnosed with a sprained knee after injuring himself in practice on Sunday.  FoxSports.com reports that DHB had his left knee wrapped in ice after the workout, and that the team did not announce a timetable for his return.  It's terrible timing for the 5th-year man, who was making a strong case for the #2 WR job in Indy.  In the meantime, this should open up a bigger opportunity for WR T.Y. Hilton.  We'll keep tabs on this situation as it unfolds.

Colts HC Chuck Pagano sees WR Darrius Heyward-Bey getting more comfortable in the offense and with QB Andrew Luck.  "He is just starting to obviously feel more comfortable in the offense terminology-wise, all the play calls, things like that and then he’s making plays whether it is big plays down the field, underneath, so I think from a confidence standpoint, a mental standpoint he is just getting more comfortable and obviously the chemistry is starting to grow between him and [Andrew] Luck," Pagano said.  DHB has had some problems with drops early in camp.  That's been an issue throughout his career and will probably continue to be in 2013. Still, it's clear Heyward-Bey will play a significant role in Indy.  He's continued to run ahead of T.Y. Hilton in camp.  DHB is moving up our WR rankings.

1st year Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey is running with the starters at the open of training camp.  Respected beat writer Mike Chappell says T.Y Hilton “might” be the 3rd guy.  DHB did build some offseason momentum, gaining the trust of the coaching staff and QB Andrew Luck.  So we’re not totally blindsided by this news.  We can envision Indy rotating both guys in with the starters as camp wears on, meaning we won’t make any changes to their 2013 projections just yet.  An emphasis on the run game will make the loser of this battle hard-pressed for reliable fantasy value.

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star lists WR Darrius Heyward-Bey as a Colts starter alongside Reggie Wayne in his early roster projection.  Chappell talked about T.Y. Hilton "thriving as the slot receiver."  Of course, he also conceded that this position battle could go either way in camp.  "Or Hilton starts outside with Wayne and moves inside in the three-receiver set," Chappell wrote Friday.  Hilton enjoyed a pretty impressive rookie campaign after arriving as a 3rd-round pick.  DHB brings intriguing size and speed.  But if he could deliver consistently, he'd still be a Raider.  We expect Hilton to draw the 2nd most targets among Indy wideouts and clearly outperform Heyward-Bey -- regardless of who technically starts.

New Colts OC Pep Hamilton told Dan Pompei of the National Football Post that he wants to follow Jim Harbaugh's offensive example.  "That's being efficient and controlling the football but at the same time making big plays down the field in the passing game," he said.  Hamilton, of course, coached under Harbaugh at Stanford before elevating to OC there after Harbaugh left to lead the Niners.  He emphasized that a stronger running game would help take some pressure off QB Andrew Luck by forcing opponents to commit more defenders to playing the run.  Luck completed just 54.1% of his passes in an otherwise strong rookie season.  The Colts ran on just 39.7% of their offensive snaps, 2nd lowest among playoff teams behind Atlanta.  Hamilton said adding OT Gosder Cherilus and G Donald Thomas will help the run game and seems to believe in RBs Vick Ballard and Donald Brown.  We'll remain a bit skeptical of the Indy running game until it proves worthy of extra attention.  Fantasy owners should enjoy hearing of the plan to continue throwing downfield, though.  WRs T.Y. Hilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey are particularly built for that style.

The Colts have signed WR Darrius Heyward-Bey to a 1-year, $3 million deal.  DHB was reportedly deciding between Indy and Detroit for his new home.  The Lions probably would have given him more fantasy upside, but Indy isn't a bad landing spot either.  Heyward-Bey could theoretically challenge T.Y. Hilton for #2 WR duties, but we're betting he settles in at #3.  The Colts produced three 780+ yard WRs last year, though, and DHB could hit that mark in 2013.  The addition is also good news for QB Andrew Luck.  Heyward-Bey is an upgrade over Donnie Avery.

A #2 WR is at or near the top of the Lions' wish list, according to insider Carlos Monarrez.  They have the best receiver in the game in Calvin Johnson.  But WRs Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles are both coming off injury and are better off in the slot.  Titus Young was supposed to be the long-term answer opposite Megatron, but those plans crashed and burned.  Detroit has shown interest in free agents Darrius Heyward-Bey and Domenik Hixon.  They could also add a WR in the middle rounds of the draft.  Whoever lines as across the field from Johnson this year will carry intriguing fantasy potential as part of Detroit's pass-heavy offense.
