DeAngelo Williams Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Fantasy Football News 2022

Most Recent Shark Bites

The Panthers have placed RB Jonathan Stewart on the reserve PUP list.  That knocks him out for the first 6 weeks of the season (only 5 games because Carolina has a Week 4 bye).  Stewart underwent offseason surgery on both ankles and still hasn’t been able to get on the practice field.  ESPN’s Chris Mortensen says J-Stew is “making progress in his rehab,” but it obviously hasn’t been enough to convince the Panthers that he’ll make an early-season impact.  Stewart could still be a factor in the 2nd half of the season, but he’s only worth stashing in deeper fantasy leagues.  Meanwhile, DeAngelo Williams is locked in as Carolina’s feature back for at least the first 6 games of the year.  He’ll be a strong RB3 or flex option for your fantasy squad.  RB Mike Tolbert figures to see an increased role with Stewart out, but he’ll still be tough to rely on in fantasy.

Last we heard, Panthers HC Ron Rivera was optimistic that he'd have RB Jonathan Stewart back for the opener.  On Tuesday, he conceded that Stewart could begin the year on the PUP -- which would cost him at least 6 games.  "At this point anything is an option," Rivera told ESPN following Tuesday's practice.  "What you're hoping is you can get him on the football field and we'll see once the doctor gets a chance to look at him."  RB DeAngelo Williams only gets more attractive with each day -- and week -- that Stewart misses.  Meanwhile, you can't look at Stewart as more than a middling RB4.  Check our RB rankings to see exactly where we place each guy.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera believes RB Jonathan Stewart will be ready for the start of the regular season.  "Oh yeah, based on what's been going on the last couple days," Rivera said. "I feel pretty optimistic."  It sounds like J-Stew is making progress in his recovery from surgery on both ankles.  He remains on the PUP list, though, and we haven't heard a timetable for his activation.  It's tough to believe that Stewart will be ready for a significant workload early on.  The Panthers have no need to push him with DeAngelo Williams capable of carrying the load.  Stewart's pure talent gives him intriguing fantasy upside, but the injury-risk leaves him as just a bench option for your fantasy squad.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart underwent surgery on both ankles this offseason.  He says the left one is fine, but that the right is "still an issue."  He was unable to participate in spring practices and isn't expected to do much early in training camp.  “It’s real difficult for the fact that you don’t want to be sitting, standing around during training camp watching guys get reps,” Stewart said. “You got to take things from the mental perspective because that’s all you can really do when you’re limited."  The hope is that Stewart will be ready for Week 1, but that's not a lock.  Insider Jonathan Jones says "the start of this season could resemble last year."  Stewart missed the 2012 season opener -- and then missed 6 more games.  The risk in drafting J-Stew in fantasy has officially surpassed the potential reward.  He' just a bench stash at this point.  DeAngelo Williams, meanwhile, is looking more and more like Carolina's lead back -- at least to open the season.  We just adjusted our projections for the Panthers backfield.

In attendance at Panthers minicamp, ESPN's Pat Yasinskas gets the feeling that the offense will feature fewer read-option plays in 2013.  "I came away with a strong sense they’ll be leaning much more heavily to a traditional running game," Yasinskas writes. "I think that’s a wonderful thing. Let [Jonathan] Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert truly be running backs, and let Cam Newton be a true quarterback. Let him use his mobility when receivers aren’t open and plays are breaking down. But don’t ask your quarterback to be your leading rusher."  Newton has averaged 127 carries, 724 yards and 11 TDs over his first 2 seasons.  Those numbers could all take a slight step back in 2013, but Newton will remain a big-time contributor in the ground game.  And it's realistic to expect him to be an even better passer.  We like Cam as a top 3 fantasy QB with the upside to lead the position in points.

The Panthers and RB DeAngelo Williams have agreed to a restructured contract.  The new deal will reportedly save the team $3.2 million against the 2013 salary cap.  Carolina will also save money in 2014 and 2015.  Williams was a potential release candidate this summer, but the restructured contract will keep him around this season -- and maybe the following 2 seasons, too.  It's bad news for RB Jonathan Stewart, who will continue to share the backfield with Williams.  This past year, J-Stew averaged 10.3 carries and 37 rushing yards per game.  Williams was at 10.8 carries and 46 yards.  Both guys were outside the top-30 RBs in fantasy points per game.

New Panthers GM Dave Gettleman offered this ringing endorsement on the radio Tuesday for RB DeAngelo Williams' status: "Right now, he's on the roster." As Pro Football Talk points out, Carolina could have released him already with the June 1 designation to spread out the cap hit. The fact he's still around suggests the team might just keep him. Then again, the Panthers drafted Oregon RB Kenjon Barner into an already-crowded backfield. They might still be hoping to trade Williams to a team that encounters an RB need. Fantasy owners would certainly love any move to take the shackles off RB Jonathan Stewart's significant upside.

Panthers TE Greg Olsen became the 4th Carolina player to restructure this offseason. His money shift leaves the team about $6..6 million over the cap, according to the Charlotte Observer. But the Panthers are still expected to cut CB Chris Gamble and DT Ron Edwards. Those moves would free up $10.4 million against the cap, thus getting Carolina under the spending limit. Fantasy football owners couldn't care much less what Olsen or any other Panther is making. But Carolina is about to get under the cap without dumping RB DeAngelo Williams. His contract still far exceeds his value to the team, but that was true when he signed it. As a fantasy player, you should hope that Williams heads elsewhere. That could enable him and Jonathan Stewart to approach their real scoring potential. In the same backfield, each would remain more likely to fall short again.

According to the Charlotte Observer, a league source says the Panthers hope to keep RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. It's not a total surprise. The team did give Williams a big contract with Stewart already around. But it's simply a bad financial decision and unnecessary football move. Stewart is a terrific back when he's allowed to be. Mike Tolbert is plenty capable as a backup. And another body could be added via free agency or the draft's middle rounds. Williams remains a quality player as well, but he's aging and expensive. He'll turn 30 in April and carry an $8.2 million cap number into 2013. Dumping that would provide a lot of relief to a team projected to be about $10 million over the cap. Our hope is this report has been floated to try to generate a trade market for Williams.

The Panthers reportedly sit about $10 million over the expected 2013 salary cap. It comes as no surprise, then, that they reworked the contracts of C Ryan Kalil and RB Jonathan Stewart. The Kalil move knocks his cap number from $9.85 million down to $6.4 million. The Charlotte Observer points out, however, that Stewart's reworked deal actually increases his 2013 cap number by $200,000. That sure makes it look like the Panthers are locking him in as their lead back for the coming season. Such a move only casts more doubt on DeAngelo Williams' future with the franchise. Carolina's all-time rushing leader is a candidate for release, thanks to the too-big contract the team gave him in summer 2011. The Panthers could save a reported $5 million in cap space this year by designating Williams a June 1 cut. That move would help the fantasy values of both Stewart and Williams. Neither has been nearly as useful as he should be over the past couple of seasons.

As expected, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is inactive for today's game against the Saints.  DeAngelo Williams will serve as the primary back in a prime matchup.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints.  He tried to practice on Wednesday but it didn't go well.  He was unable to workout on Thursday or Friday and is unlikely to play this weekend.  D-Will will serve as the lead back in a juicy matchup.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.  He's "pretty hobbled still," according to HC Ron Rivera.  J-Stew is hoping to return for Sunday's game against the Saints, but that's looking unlikely at this point.  DeAngelo Williams will be a solid RB2 if he has the backfield to himself again.

11:34am EST 12/23/12

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is inactive for today's game against the Raiders.  DeAngelo Williams is safe to use as an upside RB2 in a plus matchup.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) returned to a limited practice on Friday -- his first in 4 weeks. He's listed as questionable and looks like a game-time decision for Sunday's tilt against the Raiders. Despite the plus matchup, J-Stew is too risky to use in fantasy lineups. But his return would obviously put a massive dent in RB DeAngelo Williams' stock.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers. It means another full workload for RB DeAngelo Williams, who has racked up 32 touches with J-Stew sidelined the past 2 weeks.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) was still unable to practice on Wednesday.  He's 2-and-a-half weeks removed from a high-ankle sprain and is unlikely to play against the Chargers on Sunday.  That'll mean another significant workload for DeAngelo Williams, who has racked up 28 touches over the past 2 games.

11:31am EST 12/9/12

As expected, Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is inactive for today's game against the Falcons.  DeAngelo Williams will serve as the lead back and is a viable RB2 in a plus matchup.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is listed as doubtful after failing to practice all week. Dealing with a high-ankle sprain, he won't play against the Falcons on Sunday. RB DeAngelo Williams will get another game as the feature back, making him a viable RB2.
