DeAngelo Williams Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Fantasy Football News 2022

Most Recent Shark Bites

Panthers HC Ron Rivera says that RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart will continue to split the workload going forward.  Through 3 weeks, Williams has managed just 2.3 yards per carry on 27 chances.  Stewart is averaging 3.9 yards on his 23 rushes.  Stewart has also been more effective in the passing game, hauling in 13 balls for 140 yards vs. Wiliams' 7 for 46.  If it wasn't for the massive contract Carolina handed Williams this offseason, we'd probably already be seeing J-Stew emerge as the lead back here.  We still think it'll start swinging that way over the course of the season though.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Panthers have re-signed RB DeAngelo Williams to a 5-year, $43 million contract with $21 million guaranteed.  The biggest fantasy name available is off the market.  It sounds like it came down to the Panthers, Broncos, and Giants for Williams' services, but D-Will always said his first choice was to stay in Carolina.  He'll continue to share the backfield with Jonathan Stewart in what will likely be a true 50-50 split this year.  Both guys now look like low-end RB2s.  RB Mike Goodson's value takes a massive hit.  He's only worth a look in deep PPR formats.  We just updated our projections for the Panthers backfield.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora says he expects RB DeAngelo Williams to re-sign with the Panthers. Frankly, this move wouldn't make a ton of sense. DE Charles Johnson should be the team's top priority as far as re-signing its own free agents. Also, why would Carolina outbid other suitors for Williams when the team already boasts a backfield of Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson. Another primary piece would be a luxury, and the Panthers have plenty of other needs. For Williams' part, why return for anything less than you can get elsewhere? He figures to be one of the most interesting free agents for fantasy folks, so we'll all be watching closely.

As we get closer and closer to a new CBA being reached, details on the deal are starting to leak.  ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the new CBA will make all players with 4+ years experience unrestricted free-agents.  This was expected and means that we'll have somewhere around 500 players hitting the open market once the lockout is lifted.  The most fantasy-relevant of those include RBs DeAngelo Williams and Ahmad Bradshaw, WRs Sidney Rice and Santonio Holmes, and TE Zach Miller.  Of course, Draft Sharks will be on top of all the signings -- along with the fantasy impact.

Broncos new OC Mike McCoy confirmed that they'll be extremely run-heavy in 2011.  "We need to get back to the old Bronco way of running the football here," McCoy said. "With our head coach, John Fox, he is determined to run the ball. When I was in Carolina with him, we had a two-headed monster every week."  Denver is expected to bring in another RB through free-agency to complement Knowshon Moreno.  DeAngelo Williams, who played under Fox in Carolina, could be on their radar.

According to the National Football Post's Dan Pompei, the Panthers "believe [DeAngelo] Williams is their best RB" and plan on doing their best to bring him back for 2011.  Williams will either be a restricted or unrestricted free-agent depending on the new CBA rules.  Carolina has good depth behind him with Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson, but new OC Rob Chudzinski's offense reportedly calls for multiple backs to get a lot of action.  If Williams ends up staying in Carolina, it'd put a damper on both his and Stewart's fantasy upsides.

Free-agent RB DeAngelo Williams is open to returning to Carolina on a long-term deal.  “I've never not placed myself with the Carolina Panthers because that's the only team I've ever played for," Williams said. "That's the team that drafted me and gave me an opportunity when 26 other teams passed me by. So I'm going to hold loyal to them as long as they hold loyal to me."  We have a tough time seeing the Panthers re-signing Williams.  They'd be set at RB without him with Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson, and they really can't afford to dish out a big contract to D-Will with so many other holes on the roster.

The Panthers have placed a restricted free-agent tender on RB DeAngelo Williams.  Of course, it may mean nothing depending on the new CBA agreement.  Historically, only 3-year veterans can be tendered.  Williams has been in the league 5 seasons.  So unless there's a drastic alteration in the new agreement, Williams will still hit the free-agent market.

The Panthers have decided to use their franchise tag on C Ryan Kalil.  It's good news for RB Jonathan Stewart for a couple reasons.  First, Kalil is one of the best Cs in the game.  Carolina's offensive line should be much better in 2011 after being plagued by injuries this past year.  But perhaps more importantly for Stewart, the decision to slap the tag on Kalil means RB DeAngelo Williams will likely hit the free-agent market.  For the first time in his career, J-Stew will enter the season as his team's undisputed lead back.  We like his odds of finishing as a top-10 back in 2011.

According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, the Panthers won't be using their franchise tag on RB DeAngelo Williams.  It means that Williams will hit the free-agent market, where he'll be the top RB available.  It also means that RB Jonathan Stewart will enter the 2011 season as Carolina's clear-cut lead back.

The Panthers have placed RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) on IR, ending his 2010 season. D-Will was originally expected back as soon as this week, but he must have suffered a setback. Carolina’s 1-8 record likely played into the decision too. Williams finishes a disastrous contract year with just 361 rushing yards and 1 TD on a career-low 4.1 yards-per-carry average. With RB Jonathan Stewart’s (concussion) status still uncertain, RB Mike Goodson could be in line for another start this Sunday. But J-Stew will have a chance to prove that he’s capable of handling a lead back role as soon as he’s medically-cleared.

As expected, Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are both inactive for today's game against the Bucs.  Mike Goodson will start and should see at least 15 total touches.

As expected, Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams (foot) and Jonathan Stewart (concussion) have officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bucs.  That leaves Mike Goodson as Carolina's only healthy back.  He'll start and should see 15+ touches in a favorable matchup.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) was held out of Wednesday's practice.  His condition is improving, but his status for Sunday's game against the Bucs is still iffy.  We'll update his status again on Thursday.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) has shed his boot and was walking without a limp on Monday, per beat writer Darin Gantt.  With RB Jonathan Stewart (concussion) likely out this week, Carolina will push Williams to get ready.  Let's see if he's able to practice on Wednesday.

11:31am EST 11/7/10

As expected, Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) is inactive for today's game against the Saints.  RB Jonathan Stewart gets the start.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) is officially listed as doubtful for Week 9.  He didn't practice all week and won't play against the Saints on Sunday.  RB Jonathan Stewart will get another start.

Panthers beat writer Steve Reed cites a source who reports that RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) will not play against the Saints this Sunday.  D-Will is reportedly hoping to be back for Week 10, although that's not a lock.  RB Jonathan Stewart will get another start this weekend, but it's tough to trust him as anything more than a RB3 or flex play after last Sunday's 14-carry, 30-yard dud.

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) did not practice on Wednesday.  There's been no timetable set for his return, but owners shouldn't be counting on D-Will to play against the Saints this Sunday.

11:50am EDT 10/31/10

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) is officially inactive for today's game against the Rams.  RB Jonathan Stewart draws the start.
