Washington on Wednesday signed S Donte Whitner and placed S David Bruton on IR with a concussion. We haven't heard about Bruton suffering from particularly serious symptoms, so the IR placement might have as much to do with his weak play in coverage to date. The team also added S Josh Evans, while rookie S/LB Su'a Cravens is also making his way through the concussion protocol.

The Browns released S Donte Whitner on Saturday. That leaves them with Ibraheim Campbell and Jordan Poyer as the likely starters at safety on the current roster, after Cleveland also allowed FS Tashaun Gipson to walk in free agency. The team hasn't done much yet to improve a bad secondary, but it's tough to knock the Browns much for allowing veterans to leave from a D that allowed the league's 2nd most yards per pass attempt in 2015. We'll see what the draft brings before determining the IDP viability among Cleveland DBs. Heading into his age-31 season, Whitner might be done as an NFL starter. But we'll see where he lands.

The Browns will miss CB Joe Haden and S Donte Whitner for the 2nd straight game because of concussions. S Tashaun Gipson is also questionable because of illness. We'll see about his status for Sunday.

Browns S Donte Whitner left Sunday's loss to the Cardinals with a concussion. That's particularly poor timing given that Cleveland will play Cincinnati on Thursday night. Expect Whitner and CB Joe Haden to both sit out at least that contest with their concussions. We'll see beyond that.

The Browns have reached a deal with former 49ers S Donte Whitner, positioning him as a cheaper replacement for popular free agent S T.J. Ward.  Whitner provided only marginal IDP value in San Francisco but delivered bigger numbers with the Bills earlier in his career.  He could produce like a fantasy starter next season but likely won't sit too high in your 2014 IDP rankings.

Niners S Donte Whitner is active for today's matchup with the Eagles. He's a good tackle bet against Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and the Philly passing game.

49ers SS Donte Whitner is listed as questionable with a hip injury, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that he's expected to play against Philly. The matchup brings lots of tackle upside and makes Whitner worth the risk in IDP leagues.

S Donte Whitner had an odd week, announcing that he'd join the Bengals before backtracking and signing with the Niners. He's in San Francisco now, though, on a 3-year deal. That puts Whitner in line to start at SS. He's a strong IDP option in tackle formats after leading all DBs in tackles last year. He takes over a position in which Michael Lewis previously collected 104 and 96 tackles in his 2 full seasons (albeit under a different DC).

Bills SS Bryan Scott and FS Donte Whitner have both been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers with ankle injuries.  SS George Wilson has done an excellent job filling in for Scott and is probably an upgrade at this point.  But losing Whitner hurts, especially in run defense.  RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are both nice plays this week.

Bills DT Kyle Williams (knee) and FS Donte Whitner (ankle) have both been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Texans.  Upgrade RB Steve Slaton's already-favorable matchup.  SS Bryan Scott (ankle) is also expected to sit this one out.  The Bills won't come anywhere close to slowing down Houston's offense.

Bills rookie SS Donte Whitner will be joined by a fellow rookie at free safety, Ko Simpson, in the starting lineup. Buffalo just placed FS Troy Vincent on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Simpson, a 4th round pick from South Carolina, is a hard-hitter who will make some big plays. He'll also make big mistakes as will Whitner from time to time. Whitner, their 1st-round pick, had 4 tackles & 1 INT in his NFL debut last week. The Bills face some moderate pass offenses over the next 4 weeks - Dolphins, Jets, Vikings, Bears - so these two kids can afford to learn on the job.
