Colts TE Dwayne Allen will miss Sunday's preseason opener but said via Twitter that he expects to return to the field "very soon."  Indy has yet to officially announce the results from the 2nd opinion on Allen's injured foot, but the player's reaction clearly indicates positive news.  Allen's extended absence likely would have helped the fantasy football outlook of TE Coby Fleener, but having both TEs available will help QB Andrew Luck and the running game.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson says the team plans on using TE Coby Fleener "more out in space" in 2013.  That would presumably mean sticking him in the slot and splitting him out wide.  Fleener only ran 9.1% of his routes from the slot last year -- an inordinately low number for a pass-catching TE.  Even worse, he was targeted just 3 times on those plays (he caught 2).  More time detached from the line of scrimmage can only help Fleener's fantasy potential.  We also like that he's being reunited with college OC Pep Hamilton, who joined the Colts in the same role this offseason.  Still, the presence of TE Dwayne Allen will make it tough for Fleener to move into fantasy-starter territory.

Colts new OC Pep Hamilton wants to install a versatile offense.  And it sounds like TE Dwayne Allen will be a big part of that.  “I think if you just look at the versatility of Dwayne Allen and his ability to line up in the backfield and lead block, or detach and line up in the slot and win the one-on-one matchup, that’s a tremendous weapon that you want to have in any offense,” Hamilton said.  Allen had a promising rookie season, hauling in 45 balls for 521 yards and 3 TDs.  Also of note: he carried 3 times, with 2 of those coming in Indy's final 2 regular season games.  We wonder if Hamilton envisions Allen doing a little more of that when he talks about "versatility."  It's something to keep an eye on this offseason.  Allen's overall fantasy upside is still capped by the presence of TE Coby Fleener.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) is active for today's game against the Lions.  He'll step back into a timeshare with fellow rookie TE Dwayne Allen, leaving both guys as weak fantasy options.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) put in a full week of practice and is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Lions.  It'll be the rookie's first action since Week 8.  Fleener hasn't topped 42 yards since the season-opener and isn't a recommended fantasy option.  His return does put a dent in TE Dwayne Allen's outlook though.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) is inactive for today's game against the Bills.  It means another full workload for TE Dwayne Allen.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills.  He'll be a game-time decision, and his snaps figure to be limited if he does play.  Fleener isn't a fantasy option.  His return would dent TE Dwayne Allen's upside though.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Patriots.  Interim HC Bruce Arians says Fleener might be back for Week 12.  In the meantime, TE Dwayne Allen will continue to be a viable spot-starter in fantasy.  He's racked up 8 catches and 106 yards with Fleener out the past 2 games.

As expected, Colts TE Coby Fleener (shoulder) has been ruled out for Thursday night's game against the Jaguars.  He has a chance to return for Week 11.  In the meantime, TE Dwayne Allen will continue to be a viable spot-starter in fantasy.  He set season highs this past Sunday with 6 catches and 75 yards.

Colts TE Coby Fleener is expected to miss "a couple weeks" after dislocating his shoulder this past Sunday.  Fleener actually returned to that game, but additional testing must have revealed more damage that initially thought.  Fleener has been a non-factor in fantasy this season, failing to top 42 yards since Week 1.  In his absence, fellow rookie TE Dwayne Allen should pick up a few extra targets.  It puts him on the TE2 radar.

In pre-draft circles, Colts rookie TE Coby Fleener was considered a polished pass-catcher who needed to improve in the blocking game.  But OC Bruce Arians has the exact opposite assessment of the rookie.  “He’s a really good blocker on the offensive line," Arians said.  "We need to get him better as a receiver. But he’s making progress.”  Consider this good news for Fleener.  We know he can produce as a receiver, with good size, speed, and hands.  The fact that he's performing well as a blocker will help keep him on the field for a full slate of snaps.  Indy's initial depth chart has Fleener listed as the in-line TE and fellow rookie Dwayne Allen as the "move" TE.  Fleener remains the better bet for production, but we'd only consider him a fantasy backup.

Colts TE Coby Fleener has been generating more fantasy buzz than fellow rookie TE Dwayne Allen.  And rightfully so.  Fleener is an ultra-athletic pass-catcher who already has great chemistry with QB Andrew Luck.  But Allen is expected to have a significant role in 2012 too.  The Colts are planning on running lots of 2-TE sets to get both new guys on the field.  According to NFL.com's Albert Breer, Allen is set to play a "jack of all trades" role.  "The Clemson product has been a quick study, learning a number of positions on the fly and displaying an ability to contribute in a variety of ways," Breer writes.  ESPN's John Clayton went as far as to say that Allen actually looks "more impressive" than Fleener early in camp.  We still prefer Fleener's fantasy upside, but Allen is worth monitoring too.

The Colts used the 64th overall pick of the draft on Clemson TE Dwayne Allen.  The 6'3, 255-pounder is a well-rounded TE -- a solid blocker and reliable pass-catcher.  Allen joins Coby Fleener to give Indy a pair of talented TEs.  Comparing to duo to New England's, Allen will be the Rob Gronkowski to Fleener's Aaron Hernandez.  The Colts are doing a nice job giving rookie QB Andrew Luck some toys to play with.
