Weddle -- who turned 34 in January -- still checked in 10th among safeties in Pro Football Focus grading last season. He's expected to step in for S LaMarcus Joyner, who will hit free agency next week.

Weddle might not deliver big numbers there in the NFL, but at least the ability is present.

 ESPN.com's Matt Williamson believes Eric Weddle should be Jacksonville's top target once free agency opens. That makes plenty of sense. The Jaguars badly need help at safety. Weddle is a versatile and proven commodity. And the veteran has seemed irked that the Chargers didn't lock him up before now. Such a marriage would be good for IDP owners. Jacksonville allowed for middling players such as Courtney Greene and Sean Considine to post worthwhile fantasy numbers, and the D should be in for a lot of field time this year.
