Falcons TE Jacob Tamme is expected to need season-ending shoulder surgery, according to ESPN's Vaughn McClure. Tamme will get a 2nd opinion Wednesday. His absence would keep rookie Austin Hooper in the lead role the rest of the way. Tamme's headed for free agency in March.

Update: Tamme had surgery on Thursday and is done for the year.

Falcons TE Jacob Tamme will head to training camp as the starter, according to insider Orlando Ledbetter.  He'll need to hold off Tony Moeaki and Levine Toilolo for the job.  Moeaki is the best athlete of the bunch but has never been able to stay healthy.  Toilolo, a better blocker than receiver, caught just 31 balls as Atlanta's starter last year.  Tamme has topped 20 catches just twice -- both with Peyton Manning -- and turned 30 in March.  There's not a ton of upside here, but he could emerge as a matchup option if he hangs on to the starting job.

The Falcons have signed TE Jacob Tamme.  The 30-year-old has had a couple of solid seasons with QB Peyton Manning but is a below-average talent.  He currently stands as Atlanta's top pass-catching TE, but the Falcons could still add to the position via free agency or the draft.

Since the Broncos-Chiefs game doesn’t kickoff until Sunday night, fantasy owners should have a backup plan in place.  Jacob Tamme will draw the start if Thomas sits.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms that Broncos TE Julius Thomas (ankle) is a "true game-time decision" for today's tilt with the Dolphins. "Not even he knows if he's good to go," Rapoport adds.  It's a tough spot for fantasy owners with Denver-Miami kicking off at 4:25 pm ET.  If you're hoping to start Thomas, Jacob Tamme is your best insurance policy.  Other late-game fill-ins include Jared Cook, Niles Paul and Owen Daniels.

Denver's top 2 TEs are both sidelined with injuries.  Joel Dreessen is expected to miss at least a couple weeks with knee problems.  Jacob Tamme is dealing with a bum quad.  That's allowed TEs Julius Thomas and Virgil Green to see 1st-team action.  Both guys were drafted back in 2011 but have combined for just 9 catches.  Thomas, a 4th-round pick, is the more athletic of the 2.  He's been working as the "move" TE in camp.  Green, a 7th-rounder, has been playing as a more traditional in-line TE.  Thomas would appear to have the most upside, but we'll continue to keep an eye on the pecking order over the next month.  The 2 youngsters are much better dynasty options than redraft, though.  There won't be many targets to go around this year in Denver's loaded pass-catching corps.

Broncos TE Jacob Tamme has been one of QB Peyton Manning's favorite targets in camp so far.  That's not surprising considering the duo hooked up 67 times in Indianapolis back in 2010.  "A fast guy, looks like a receiver type," is how S Mike Adams described Tamme.  He should provide Manning with a reliable target over the middle of the field, although we're expecting WRs Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker to be the primary playmakers in the passing game.  Tamme will also be competing for targets with TE Joel Dreessen.  We recognize the potential upside Tamme brings to the table, but we're not willing to bet on it at his current 8.04 ADP.

The Broncos are planning on running a bunch on 2-TE sets this season with Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen. Both guys have proved capable of contributing in the passing game when called upon. And QB Peyton Manning has always liked getting his TEs involved. Tamme's prior history with Manning -- he caught 67 balls from him in Indianapolis a couple years ago -- makes him the better bet for production. But Dreessen will be in the mix too and will likely put a dent in Tamme's numbers. We think Tamme is being overvalued in fantasy drafts as the 9th TE off the board.

Broncos TE Julius Thomas underwent surgery last week to repair ligament damage in his ankle.  He won't do much in OTAs but is expected to be ready for training camp.  A raw prospect, Thomas appeared in just 5 games and caught only 1 pass last year.  After Denver's additions of TEs Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen this offseason, Thomas will once again be an afterthought.
