Josh McCown Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Bucs QB Josh McCown (thumb) is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Steelers. QB Mike Glennon will draw the start. He was impressive in his 2013 rookie season and has a plus matchup this week. Glennon is on the QB2 radar.

ESPN's Adam Schefter confirms that Bucs QB Mike Glennon is expected to start Sunday's game against the Steelers.  QB Josh McCown (thumb) probably isn't healthy enough to start anyway, but his play over the first 3 weeks makes the decision to go with Glennon easier.  The 2nd-year QB was shaky against Atlanta last Thursday night but turned in an impressive rookie season.  Consider him a viable QB2 in a plus matchup against the Steelers this weekend.

ESPN's Pat Yasinkas reports that Bucs QB Josh McCown will miss at least 1 game with a "significant sprain" to his right thumb.  McCown hit the thumb on a defender's helmet in the Thursday night loss at Atlanta.  Mike Glennon is expected to start against Pittsburgh in Week 4, and then we'll see beyond that.  Here's hoping that losing McCown doesn't impact your fantasy football team at all.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that the "belief" is that Bucs QB Josh McCown suffered a sprained thumb in Thursday night's loss to the Falcons.  He's undergoing an MRI today to confirm.  A sprain would be better news than a broken bone.  But considering it's on his throwing thumb. it could still cost McCown time.  Tampa might be better off rolling with QB Mike Glennon anyway.

Bucs QB Josh McCown injured his right (throwing) hand when he banged it against a helmet in Thursday night's game against the Falcons.  He played another series but then headed back to the locker room with trainers.  We'll pass along an update when we get one.  QB Mike Glennon is next up for the Bucs.

Update: McCown has been ruled out for the game with a thumb injury.  "It's wrapped up like a club," beat writer Roy Cummings tweeted.  Glennon has a chance to make a case for the starting job in the 2nd half.

Bucs OC Jeff Tedford might not be available for this weekend's season opener, according to the Tampa Bay Times.  Tedford was hospitalized last week after an undisclosed surgery.  He was at the Bucs facility last weekend and has been helping with the game plan for the Panthers.  But might not be able to attend Sunday's game.  "Obviously, Jeff's been leading our offense through the whole offseason, so any time you take a piece away, there can be some disruption," QB Josh McCown said. "But the coaches seem like they are, so far, doing a great job picking up the slack and doing what we need to do."  It's not an ideal situation, but it also isn't enough for us to downgrade any Bucs in the Week 1 Rankings.

QB Mike Glennon didn't appear to be a part of the Bucs' plans when the new regime arrived this offseason.  QB Josh McCown was signed and immediately named the starter.  Then Glennon reportedly went on the trade block.  But the 2013 3rd-rounder has changed Tampa's minds over the past couple months.  "We looked at all the tape of last year," GM Jason Lich said. "Having him in the building and going through that first minicamp with him and seeing how he was in meetings and interacted with the team -- and more importantly how he was on the field -- just secured our feelings of how we evaluated him and felt about him."  The Bucs now consider Glennon their QB of the future, with McCown as the veteran bridge.  Glennon is worth stashing in dynasty leagues.

The Bucs turned down trade offers for QB Mike Glennon from "at least a half dozen teams," according to insider Rick Stroud. Tampa's new regime hasn't shown much faith in Glennon, signing free agent Josh McCown and almost immediately naming him the 2014 starter.  But the organization reportedly still views Glennon as the QB of the future.  "There's a lot of interest and we want to keep Mike," GM Jason Licht said. "(They were) just feeling it out. I know that Mike has a very good reputation throughout the league as far as his developmental future."  Glennon is worth stashing in dynasty leagues.  He tossed 19 TDs vs. just 9 INTs in his 2013 rookie campaign.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports that he believes the Bucs are trying to trade QB Mike Glennon.  We're certainly not shocked to hear that Glennon's available after HC Lovie Smith grabbed QB Josh McCown in free agency and immediately named him the starter.  But this apparent revelation suggests that the new staff really doesn't like the incumbent.  We thought Glennon played fairly well as a 3rd-round rookie on a bad team last season.  The 19-9 TD-INT ratio looked particularly solid.  Glennon certainly makes sense for a few teams at the likely price of a mid-round draft pick.  Tampa, meanwhile, has been rumored as a potential suitor for Johnny Manziel.  We'll be curious to see how this one plays out.

The Bucs signed QB Josh McCown to be their starter.  HC Lovie Smith gave a straightforward "Yes, he is," when asked if McCown would be under center come Week 1.  It's a tad surprising that Tampa won't at least stage a competition between the veteran and 2nd-year QB Mike Glennon.  But the Bucs new brass didn't draft Glennon, and they gave McCown $10 million for the next 2 years.  We remain skeptical about his ability to succeed outside of Marc Trestman's offense, though.  McCown sported a career 58% completion rate with 37 TDs and 44 INTs in 10 NFL seasons before arriving in Chicago.  Tampa will likely look to McCown as a game manager, relying on its running game and defense.  We'd still bet on Glennon making multiple starts in 2014.

QB Josh McCown has signed a 2-year deal with the Bucs.  The 34-year-old will compete with 24-year-old Mike Glennon for the starting job in Tampa.  McCown is coming off a career-best season in Bears HC Marc Trestman's offense but looked like a journeyman backup through his first 10 NFL seasons.  We're skeptical about McCown's ability to succeed sans Trestman.  The Bucs new front office clearly believes in him, though.  And remember that this front office didn't draft Glennon.  We'll keep an eye on the battle for the starting job this offseason, but neither guy is likely to ascend above low-end QB2 status.

UPDATE:  HC Lovie Smith indicated that McCown will be his starter.  With roughly 6 months until Week 1, however, there's plenty of time for that to change.

Bears QB Josh McCown turned in an impressive 2013 season, completing 67% of his passes with 13 TDs and 1 INT in 8 appearances.  He'll hit the free-agent market this offseason.  But McCown wants to stay in Chicago, even though that'd mean holding a clipboard for Jay Cutler.  And the Bears supposedly want McCown back.  “I think it was mutual that we both wanted to continue working together,” he said. “So I think we understand where we’re coming from there."  Despite his eye-opening performance this past season, the 34-year-old McCown is unlikely to garner a lucrative contract on the open market.  Look for him to return to Chicago in 2014, leaving him as only a handcuff in fantasy.

Bears HC Marc Trestman named Jay Cutler his starting QB for Sunday's game against the Browns.  It means Cutler responded well to yesterday's practice.  He'll still carry plenty of risk as a Week 15 fantasy starter, though.  Cutler struggled when returning from injury in Week 10, tossing for 250 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT before getting pulled late in the game.  Of course, there's upside here, too.  Cutler was sitting 8th among QBs in fantasy points through 6 healthy weeks.  And this Bears passing game is humming.  Click here to see where Cutler sits in our Week 15 QB Rankings.

Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) has been cleared to work out "full speed," per HC Marc Trestman.  The team will put him through a "thorough" workout on Wednesday and then make a decision on its Week 15 starter.  Trestman will announce that decision tomorrow.  He added that he's "optimistic" about Cutler's status.  It sounds like he's now the favorite to start Sunday's game against the Browns.  Fantasy owners should still hang on to QB Josh McCown for now.  Whoever starts will be a sure-fire fantasy starter.

Bears QB Josh McCown was brilliant again on Monday night, racking up 348 yards and 4 TDs, plus another score on the ground.  He's averaging 352 yards and 3 total scores over his last 3 games.  But HC Marc Trestman reiterated after Monday night's win that a healthy Jay Cutler remains his starting QB.  "There's no change in the plan," Trestman said. "We'll see where Jay is this week. He'll have to be released by the doctors. When Jay is ready to play, he'll be playing."  Trestman added that Cutler will need to put in a full week of practice before returning to the starting lineup.  Both Bears QBs are worth owning in fantasy right now.  Trestman has this passing game humming.  Chicago gets a mediocre Browns pass defense in Week 15, followed by a dream matchup against the Eagles in Week 16.

Bears HC Marc Trestman named QB Josh McCown his starter for Monday night's game against the Cowboys.  He can now safely be plugged into fantasy lineups as a high-upside starter.  QB Jay Cutler put in a limited practice on Thursday and seems to be making progress.  But the Bears have no reason to rush him back with McCown playing so well.  Both Chicago QBs remain worth rostering in fantasy.  After this week's juicy matchup, the Bears get Cleveland (15th against QBs) and Philadelphia (24th).

Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) was listed as a limited participant in Thursday's practice.  It's unclear exactly how much he did, but it certainly gives him a chance to play against the Cowboys on Monday night.  Hopefully we'll have a better idea of Chicago's QB situation before the games kick off on Sunday.  Whoever starts at QB -- Cutler or Josh McCown -- will have huge fantasy upside.

Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) is hoping to return for Monday night's game against the Cowboys.  But he's yet to gain medical clearance to do so. “Getting better,” Cutler said of the ankle Monday. “Still got to talk to the doctors, gotta go through some stuff this week. I don’t know. I think if we’re gonna have any shot at playing, I’m gonna have to practice [this week]. I still feel like I’m gonna get back here really soon. I want to play. It’s just the trainers and doctors and going through the scenario we’ve got to go through.”  Consider Cutler 50-50 for Week 14.  Whoever starts for Chicago -- Cutler or Josh McCown -- will be a QB1 in fantasy.

Bears QB Jay Cutler (ankle) has already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Vikings.  But he believes he has a good chance of being cleared for Week 14.  "I'd be pretty disappointed if I wasn't able to play for that game," Cutler said Monday.  QB Josh McCown has played well in Cutler's absence, but the Bears offense will get a boost with the return of their starter.  Cutler will have an extra day to get ready for Week 14 with the Bears taking on the Cowboys on Monday Night Football.

Bears HC Marc Trestman confirmed that QB Jay Cutler (ankle) is not expected to be ready for Sunday's game against the Vikings.  He's dealing with a significant ankle injury and is still considered week-to-week.  QB Josh McCown turned in another solid effort against the Rams and will be a high-end QB2 vs. Minnesota's leaky pass defense.
