Raiders HC Lane Kiffin won't name his quarterback for Sunday's game against the Titans until the last minute. QB Josh McCown, coming off a broken foot, practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday. "We'll have to go in and sit down and watch the film again and talk with Josh also," Kiffin said. We have a feeling Daunte Culpepper will go one more time, giving McCown another week to get as healthy as possible. We'll see.

Lane Kiffin said we might see both Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper in the game Sunday. That's silly. Start one guy and stick with him for 60 minutes. This isn't the 2006 Florida Gators with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow. McCown, currently ranked #14 for the week on our board, will defintely drop down the Weekly Updated List if we hear more of this the next few days.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports: "Josh McCown accidentally smashed his index finger into the helmet of Oakland offensive tackle Cornell Green, slightly cracking it [vs. the Lions on Sunday]. McCown could not grip a football Monday. The Raiders are uncertain whether McCown will be able to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos, yet others around the league are skeptical. Quarterbacks with similar injuries have, in the past, been sidelined three to four weeks." Daunte Culpepper, we're coming for you!

Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper didn't start the final preseason game vs. Seattle but again he delivered when called upon and showed Lane Kiffin he's ready to play. He hit 11-of-19 passes and laid the ball out softly when needed. Two weeks ago he was all fastballs. Josh McCown has been forcing the ball into coverage. Both QBs attempted 47 passes in August and Culpepper bested him in completion % (55.3 to 51.1), TD passes (4 to 0), and passer rating (95.0 to 75.8). Sounds like Daunte's gig unless there's underlying medical concerns about his knee. We'll know soon.

While ESPNews has been flashing "Culpepper to start for Oakland" for 30 minutes we just heard NFL Network's Adam Schefter say that Josh McCown is expected to be named the starter. 10-to-1 says ESPN is wrong.

The Raiders started Josh McCown vs. Arizona since JaMarcus Russell is still holding out. The first thing we noticed was the stability up front: LT Sims, LG Gallery, C Grove, RG Carlisle (signed from Denver) and RT Green looks like a decent group. McCown dropped back to pass 10 times and had a pocket each time. He hit a couple nice throws and led one 15-play drive that was aided by a few Cardinals penalties. McCown is McCown, he'll do some good things and bad things. Andrew Walter came in next and just looks stiff out there. Daunte Culpepper fumbled twice on his first three plays as a Raider, but kept his cool and had a beautiful rollout pass to WR Johnnie Lee Higgins for 50 yards. McCown's probably out in front but Walter and Culpepper will get more chances to show they can play. Overall Lane Kiffin's new offense looks a bit Saints-like, lots of motion and misdirection, and could function well if they settle on a QB.

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Oakland Raiders are interested in trading for Lions backup QB Josh McCown. Not a bad fit in our opinion. It could also mean Oakland is going to draft WR Calvin Johnson #1 overall.

The Oakland Raiders acquired both Lions QB Josh McCown and Lions WR Mike Williams on Day One in exchange for a 4th-round pick. Great bargain-shopping for the Raiders, who had already traded down to start the 2nd round; dealing the 33rd overall pick to Arizona in exchange for their 38th selection and this extra 4th-round pick. McCown will push JaMarcus Russell and keep him on his toes. Williams will try to prove to Lane Kiffin that he's the same man-beast Lane coached at USC.

Rob Parker of the Detroit News has sounded the horn for Josh McCown. The Lions are now 2-8 and even though Kitna has been rock-solid behind a makeshift offensive line, it would make sense to give McCown a shot. He failed to throw a TD pass in a 17-10 loss to the worst team in football, the Arizona Cardinals. "If it wasn't obvious before, it should be now. Lions quarterback Jon Kitna isn't the answer," writes Parker. "If backup Josh McCown can't get a shot after back-to-back lousy performances by Kitna with a 2-8 team heading nowhere fast, when can he?" Rod Marinelli seems to be a staunch Kitna-supporter but we're thinking this reporter might be onto something. We'll shave Kitna's Rest of Way ranking and recommend his fantasy owners pick up McCown.

MLive.com reports Lions backup QB Josh McCown might have been demoted to the #3 spot behind Dan Orlovsky. He took the 3rd shift behind Orlovsky in their preseason opener vs. Denver then stayed there in Sunday's practice too.

The Detroit Lions signed free-agent QB Josh McCown to a 2-year, $6 million contract. He'll compete with Jon Kitna for the starting job as Joey Harrington will surely be cut (saving the team over $5 million). Don't rule out Detroit taking Jay Cutler with the 9th pick (if he's there) but OC Mike Martz probably prefers to hit the ground running with an experienced signal-caller instead of grooming a rookie.

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Cardinals) will visit the Detroit Lions this week. As erratic as Josh was in Arizona, we get the feeling he would pick up Mike Martz' system better than Joey Harrington -- at a fraction of the price.
