A day after the Texans waived S D.J. Swearinger, the Buccaneers claimed the third-year player. Swearinger struggled mightily in run D last year, according to Pro Football Focus grading. That was surprising, given that he performed best in that area as a 2013 rookie. Swearinger has proved below average in coverage both seasons. He did, at least, look dangerous as a blitzer at times. With the Bucs, Swearinger should get to compete with Bradley McDougald, Major Wright and Chris Conte for the starting spots. The Bucs also picked up waived former Bears OLB Khaseem Greene on Tuesday.
The Bears on Tuesday signed LB Mason Foster. The former Buc struggled as Tampa's middle starter, especially in coverage. But Foster is an athletic player with some big-play upside if he can land a 3-down role in Chicago's new D. Foster figures to compete for an ILB job in what's expected to primarily be a 3-4 front. LBs Jon Bostic, Christian Jones, Khaseem Greene and perhaps Shea McClellin stand as other current likely competitors inside.
