The Colts released QB Matt Ryan. The no-brainer move saves $17.2 million against the 2023 salary cap. Ryan has had a strong NFL career, but the soon-to-be 38-year-old's tank is clearly empty. He mustered just 6.6 yards per attempt with 14 TDs vs. 13 INTs in 12 outings this past season. We'll see if Ryan snags a backup job elsewhere, but he's well off the fantasy radar. The Colts are left with QBs Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger but figure to be eyeing the position with the 4th overall pick of next month's draft.
Colts interim HC Jeff Saturday said QB Sam Ehlinger will start Sunday's finale vs. the Texans. QB Nick Foles is "really sore" and "in a lot of pain" with the rib injury he suffered in the loss to the Giants, Saturday said. Ehlinger completed 61.5% of his passes and averaged just 5.9 yards per attempt in 2 starts earlier this season.
Colts QB Nick Foles is questionable to return to Sunday's game vs. the Giants with a rib injury. He was in a lot of pain and had to be carted back to the locker room. We'll update his status when we know more. With QB Matt Ryan inactive, QB Sam Ehlinger will replace Foles.
Update: Foles has been ruled out.
The Colts started QB Matt Ryan in the 1st game under interim HC Jeff Saturday, and he proved solid in the victory over the Raiders. Ryan completed 21 of his 28 passes for 222 yards (7.9 per attempt), 1 TD and no INTs. His lone TD pass went to WR Parris Campbell on a 35-yard pass and run. Ryan added an uncharacteristic 38 yards and a TD on the ground. The start came as a surprise because Saturday said at his introductory press conference that he planned to keep Sam Ehlinger in the lineup. The move back to Ryan should be good for Colts receivers, though Week 11 brings a tough matchup with the Eagles.
Colts beat writer Zak Keefer tweeted that it “appears” QB Matt Ryan will start today against the Raiders. Ryan was seen taking snaps with starting C Ryan Kelly in pre-game warmups. We’ve updated projections to account for the news.
Colts QB Sam Ehlinger remains the starter going forward, interim HC Jeff Saturday said at his introductory press conference on Monday night. Ehlinger's offense has produced just 19 points over the past 2 weeks. He was ok vs. Washington in Week 8 but face planted against the Patriots this past Sunday, completing 15 of 29 passes for 103 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT. There are plenty of other issues in Indianapolis, but Ehlinger has not looked like the answer at QB for the Colts so far. QB Matt Ryan has been ruled out of the past 2 games with his right shoulder injury. We'll see if Indianapolis goes back to him once healthy.
The Colts have fired HC Frank Reich, according to multiple reports. It's a notable fall for a guy who finished 3 of his 1st 4 Indy seasons over .500. The Colts, of course, fell off late last season and missed the playoffs at 9-8. Then they imported a veteran QB for the 3rd straight offseason. Matt Ryan has proved even worse than Carson Wentz, getting yanked 2 weeks ago in favor of Sam Ehlinger. That switch hasn't helped an offense that ranks last in scoring and 27th in total yards. It's tough to see this move making much impact for fantasy football scoring this year. Indianapolis still has a trash QB situation, Jonathan Taylor running on a sprained ankle and a weak offensive line. We're hoping for a switch back to Ryan at QB to at least support target volume for the team's wideouts.
Colts QB Sam Ehlinger threw for just 103 yards on 15-of-29 passing in Sunday's loss to the Patriots. He threw an INT and took 9 sacks. Ehlinger did run for 39 yards on 5 attempts to lead Indy in rushing. WR Michael Pittman finished with only 3 catches for 22 yards on a team-high 6 targets. Parris Campbell posted a 2-15 receiving line on 5 targets. WR Alec Pierce drew just 2 looks, catching 1 for 23 yards. A visit to the Raiders lies next on the schedule.
The Colts on Tuesday fired OC Marcus Brady. It's an understandable move for a team ranked 30th in scoring and 18th in yards, but we're not sure how much impact there will be. HC Frank Reich calls the offensive plays, and Brady worked under him since Reich took the Indy job in 2018. If Brady were a primary issue here, it's tough to imagine him climbing from QBs coach to OC in 2021 and then maintaining the OC job this season. We'll see where the Colts offense goes from here.
Colts QB Sam Ehlinger threw for 201 yards in his 1st NFL start Sunday against the Commanders and ran for 15 yards on 6 attempts. He took 2 sacks and lost a fumble, but it doesn't sound like he did anything to jeopardize his role. "I thought he threw the ball well, I thought he looked poised, made good decisions, gave us a chance," HC Frank Reich told reporters afterward, according to The AP. "We'll look at the film more closely, but my first impression was that he played well." Ehlinger targeted WR Michael Pittman with 39% of his pass attempts (9 of 23). WR Alec Pierce finished 2nd with 5 targets. WR Parris Campbell garnered just 2 looks. Ehlinger shouldn't be in your fantasy football plans for a Week 9 visit to New England.
Colts QB Matt Ryan (shoulder) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Commanders. HC Frank Reich said earlier this week that the team planned on turning to QB Sam Ehlinger regardless of Ryan’s health. QB Nick Foles will be the backup this weekend.
Colts HC Frank Reich announced Monday that he'll start QB Sam Ehlinger next Sunday against Washington. It makes sense that Indy would want a change from Matt Ryan's poor play. It's surprising, however, that they're already turning from a high-priced veteran acquired just last offseason to a 6th-round pick from last year who has yet to throw a regular-season pass. Ryan is dealing with a shoulder strain, but Reich says, "Right now the move is for Sam to be the starter for the rest of the season," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Ehlinger did go 24-of-29 passing this preseason for 289 yards (9.97 yards per attempt) and 4 TDs (13.8% rate). Ehlinger will make his starting debut against a Washington defense that has been 7th most friendly to QB scoring this season. We'll see how this goes.
Update: Ian Rapoport reports that it's a Grade 2 shoulder separation for Ryan. Reich, however, announced the plan as a replacement going forward rather than a fill-in assignment.
Citing a team source, Colts beat writer Zak Keefer writes that QB Sam Ehlinger shouldn’t be “ruled out” as a potential starter. The Texas product started for 3+ years but didn’t come off the board until Round 6 of the 2021 draft. He didn't throw a single pass last season. In other words, Indy will surely bring in a veteran and/or an early-round rookie following the Carson Wentz trade. Ehlinger, though, is at least a name to monitor in deep superflex dynasty leagues.
The Colts have activated QB Carson Wentz from the COVID list. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the QB still needs to gain final clearance to play in Sunday's game against the Raiders. We'll watch for that heading into the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
The Colts are placing QB Carson Wentz on the COVID list. It's not immediately clear whether he tested positive, but that would knock Wentz out for at least 10 days because he's unvaccinated. Sam Ehlinger is the backup. The rookie beat Jacob Eason for the backup job over the summer but has yet to throw a regular-season pass in the NFL.
Colts QB Sam Ehlinger is expected to miss 5-6 weeks with a sprained ACL, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That means it'll be Jacob Eason under center for Indianapolis if Carson Wentz isn't ready for the start of the season. Eason has had an up-and-down training camp and completed 10 of 14 passes for just 74 yards in the final preseason game on Friday.
