Panthers WR Steve Smith (hamstrings) is inactive today. Keary Colbert and Drew Carter are both sneaky flex-plays. Keyshawn Johnson was already a solid fantasy starter.

Panthers HC John Fox didn't give a clear answer when asked if Steve Smith (hamstring) would practice Wednesday. "We'll evaluate him day-to-day, and when he's deemed healthy, he'll be out there," Fox said. "Until then, it will be more of the same." If we don't get some better news on Smith soon we'll have to really talk.

We called Panther reporter Scott Fowler about Steve Smith's hamstring today. Smith injured his left hamstring in the preseason and then tweaked the right one before Week 1. "Yeah, he hasn't practiced," Fowler said. "He's day-to-day, we don't know much more than that." If we had to guess we'd say Smith sits out another game. Prepare yourself to start another option like Michael Jenkins, Terry Glenn, Eric Moulds, Jerricho Cotchery, or Reggie Williams.

Panthers WR Steve Smith confirmed he had "surgery" on an in-grown toenail on Aug. 17th. "A lot of people say, 'Ah, in-grown toe-nail, you can live through it,'" Smith said. "Those people are sitting their fat (butt) at a desk. But I use my feet more often than most people. That's like someone with carpal tunnel being an administrative assistant and it's strenuous on that body part." Uhhhh... OK.... Anyway, his hamstring is reportedly a non-issue. Smith did practice twice this week and should be fine for the Sept. 10 opener against Atlanta.

We'll post a chronological preseason injury list Friday morning.

Steve Smith returned to Panthers practice Sunday. His hamstring caused him to miss 19 camp sessions. You know he was really hurt because Smith loves to practice. Hopefully he'll use this next week to get some timing down with Jake Delhomme and everything will be fine.

From the Charlotte Observer: "Wide receiver Steve Smith isn't practicing with the team yet, but is doing more every day as he rehabilitates his strained left hamstring. He looked good running straight ahead at about two-thirds speed and running short pass routes on a side field. Delhomme said he can tell Smith is getting bored. He said he was taking practice snaps from center Justin Hartwig on Monday when Smith 'comes running into my vision just for me to throw him a pass.'" We're not worried. If we don't see him in the 3rd preseason game (the tune-up game for NFL starters) we'll be worried.

Panthers WR Steve Smith (hamstring) participated in full-pads practice Wednesday morning. He reportedly didn't show the slightest inkling of any leg injury.

Last year's top fantasy WR was injured on Saturday, the first day of training camp. Steve Smith pulled up lame while running a deep route during an afternoon session. He grabbed his left hamstring, took a couple of steps, and then went to the ground. After throwing his gloves in disgust and sitting on the field for about a minute, Smith was carted off the field. "It seems like he probably strained it," Panthers GM Marty Hurney said. "He's done this before in training camp." An intriguing side note to Smith's injury: He missed the final week of June's coaching sessions with hamstring discomfort.
