ESPN reports that Panthers WR Steve Smith broke his arm in a flag football game this weekend. The break is near the same spot that he injured in Week 16 last season. Smith underwent surgery last night and will not be ready for the starting of training camp. The team is hopeful he’ll be ready for Week 1, but that’s far from a sure thing. We just nudged him down our WR rankings a few spots. We’ll be sure to update his status throughout the summer.

Panthers WR Steve Smith was recently on WFNZ AM in Charlotte discussing the Panthers offseason moves and lack thereof this spring.  Shockingly, Smith had this to say about his situation in Carolina: "Well the thing is, everybody keeps saying a receiver to complement me . . . I don't want anyone to complement me. I'm turning 31 years old, people can say I'm losing speed, yada, yada, yada. I would like a younger guy to come in and eventually take my spot. I don't want to be a #1 anymore."  An NFL WR that doesn't want to be the focal point of his offense? This has fantasy red flag written all over it.  The Panthers are without a 1st round pick this year and  have virtually no other WRs on the roster capable of taking over #1 WR duties, so don't expect much of a shakeup to the Panthers receiving corps.  But Smith's lack of vigor is certainly disheartening.

Panthers WR Steve Smith injured his wrist on a TD catch in the 3rd quarter of Sunday's game against the Giants.  He made it to the sidelines and then was carted into the locker room.  Don't expect him to return.

Panthers WR Steve Smith suffered a broken left arm during Sunday's win over the Giants.  He sustained the injury on a 27-yard catch but trucked into the end zone anyways.  Smith's season is obviously over, but he'll be ready in plenty of time for OTAs this spring.

Panthers WR Steve Smith is active for today's game against the Jets.  He was added to the injury report on Saturday with a rib injury.

Panthers WR Steve Smith was added to the team's injury report on Saturday as "questionable" with a rib injury.  It's unknown when he suffered the injury or how serious it is.  We'll have to wait until noon ET on Sunday to know whether he is active or not for the team's game against the Jets.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith has been diagnosed with bruised ribs. Despite the Panthers being on a short week, it doesn’t appear that Smith is going to miss any games. He should be ready to play when the Panthers square off against the Dolphins on Thursday.

Panthers WR Steve Smith was reportedly involved in a minor car accident on his way to tonight's game against the Dolphins.  He was uninjured and will start in a favorable matchup.

Panther's WR Steve Smith has a knee injury which limited him in practice today. It doesn't seem like anything that would keep Smith out of the game against Tampa Bay, but this is the first we have heard of the injury. Smith leads the Panthers with 20 receptions this season but has yet to score a TD. Depending on how long he’s had it, this knee injury could be a contributor to Smith's lack of production thus far.

Panthers WR Steve Smith (knee) put in a full practice on Friday.  He'll suit up come Sunday, and make for a solid WR1 play.  Make sure he's in your lineup.

As expected, Panthers WR Steve Smith (knee) is active for today's game against the Bucs.  Get him in your lineup in a sweet matchup.

Panthers WR Steve Smith was outwardly upset about his 1-catch game against the Bucs last week.  "It's bittersweet," Smith said is the locker room after the game. "We get the win, but I have a limited role. So, obviously, I see this game as showing I'm no longer an asset to this team."  HC John Fox disputed that claim on Monday.  "I haven't had a chance to visit with Steve, but I think the fact that they double him every play is an asset," Fox said. "That would be my impression."  Getting doubled is nothing new for Smith, though.  His lack of production is more a result of his declining skill set -- he's 30 years old now -- and QB Jake Delhomme's inconsistent play.  Smith is no longer a must-start.  Consider him more of a WR2 at this point.

Panthers WR Steve Smith appeared in his 1st preseason game of 2009 tonight against the Ravens.  He finished with 2 catches for 37 yards and looked 100% healthy.  Smith was targeted 4 times.  He can be safely drafted as a WR1.

Panthers WR Steve Smith was carted off the practice field today with what looked like an arm injury.  "Not sure if it's Smith's wrist or shoulder, but he doesn't appear happy," beat writer Darin Gantt said via Twitter.  We'll hold off on adjusting his projections until we learn more.  Update: X-rays on Smith's shoulder were negative, but no time-table has been set for his return. The Rock Hill Herald calls him "doubtful" to play in the preseason.  We're trimming his projections a bit.

WR Steve Smith suffered a shoulder injury during camp yesterday.  X-rays came back negative, but no time-frame has been set for his return.  When asked if he'd be ready for the team's season opener, Smith replied, "If I can play, then I'm playing, whether it be preseason or the regular season. If I can't play, I'm not going to play. If I'm not going to be effective and able to compete, then it's not best for the team."  Smith's agent said today that his client will miss "at least" 2 weeks.  We'd be surprised if he saw any preseason action.  But Smith's absence isn't as big as someone like Antonio Bryant's because Smith and Delhomme have been working together for years.  Don't forget that Smith missed the first 2 weeks of last season and still finished as a top-10 WR.

Just 4 days after suffering what appeared to be a pretty serious shoulder injury, Panthers WR Steve Smith was back on the practice field today in full pads.  He was held out of team drills, but Smith appears well on his way to a full recovery.  We're bumping his projections back up to where they were pre-injury, but let this serve as a reminder that Smith isn't the most durable player.

Panthers WR Steve Smith caught 4 passes for 105 yards at Green Bay. Jake Delhomme only targeted Smith once in the first half but went to him 5 times in the 2nd half. They hooked up for 36- and 54-yard bombs where Smith was twice tackled at the 1-yard line. DeAngelo Williams finished both drives. It was Smith's 5th 100-yard game in the last 7 weeks. He hasn't posted that big monster game this year but Smith is doing his job efficiently and quietly. He's 6th in the NFL with 958 receiving yards despite a 2-game suspension in September. Only Roddy White (6) and Andre Johnson (6) have more 100-yard receiving games than Smith (5).

Steve Smith caught 8 passes for 168 yards at Atlanta, his first 100-yard game vs. Atlanta since 2005. He was targeted 12 times and abused whichever corner the Falcons put on him. S Erik Coleman was sitting over the top, too. Smith did drop a 5-yard TD but overall he was terrific. Smith has moved up to 8th in receiving yards with 853 despite being suspended for the first 2 games. He faces Green Bay at Lambeau this Sunday, then at home vs. Tampa Bay on Monday night in week 14.  Hopefully Delhomme's elbow isn't a problem going forward.

Steve Smith missed Monday's practice after suffering a concussion in Saturday's fake game against the Colts. He's going to miss the first 2 regular-season games anyway (suspended) so he has plenty of time to rest.

Panthers beat blogger Greg Bailey reports on Steve Smith in training camp today: "Steve Smith leaped high to try to grab a pass over the middle, only to land awkwardly on his knee. Smitty took his time getting up before trying to shake it off. He ended up talking with a trainer who came over to see what happened, but he shook it off and ran routes just a minute later."
