Washington on Monday placed S Su'a Cravens on the reserve/left squad list, which officially deactivates him for the rest of the season. The team had initially placed him on the exempt/left squad list, which would have given him a month to decide whether to return. Amid rumors of a potential return this week, however, the franchise clearly has gotten no indication that it can count on the young safety for 2017. "We sincerely hope that Su'a uses this time away from the club to reflect upon whether or not he'd like to resume his career in the National Football League in 2018," the team said in a statement. Washington will still control Cravens' rights for 3 more seasons if he comes back.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Washington S Su'a Cravens is expected to rejoin the team this week. Whether/how quickly that becomes a return to the lineup remains to be seen. IDP owners don't need to chase him right now, but a starting Cravens would carry intriguing upside.

Cravens has spent most of August recovering from knee surgery after aggravating a college injury in the 1st preseason game. Perhaps the issue was more serious than initially believed. Or perhaps this will prove to be an overreaction to a slow recovery, similar to how Seahawks S Earl Thomas tweeted doubt about his football future after suffering a season-ending leg fracture in Week 13 last year. Between the knee and the uncertainty, though, we've removed Cravens from our 2017 IDP rankings altogether. He's just not worth the risk at such a wide-open and fungible fantasy position. That said, a healthy Cravens would be worth a waiver pickup if he regains his starting job. If he's not ready for the start of the season, Deshazor Everett will start at SS in his place.

Cravens hurt the knee in Washington's preseason opener, but it was said to be a re-injury of an issue that arose in college. Reports have treated it as a minor issue, and Cravens reportedly still expects to be ready for Week 1. Missing most of August, however, can't be good for a guy breaking into the starting lineup in his 2nd season. We'll see if he retains the starting gig come the regular season.

Word is he'll return to action in 2-3 weeks, though. We'll look for better info on the actual injury to gauge how concerned we should actually be.

Washington on Wednesday signed S Donte Whitner and placed S David Bruton on IR with a concussion. We haven't heard about Bruton suffering from particularly serious symptoms, so the IR placement might have as much to do with his weak play in coverage to date. The team also added S Josh Evans, while rookie S/LB Su'a Cravens is also making his way through the concussion protocol.

Washington has announced that 2nd-round pick Su'a Cravens will play safety, according to the team site. Cravens played safety primarily in college, but many had assumed that he would move to more of a LB role in the NFL, perhaps something similar to Arizona's Deone Bucannon. He'll battle DeAngelo Hall, David Bruton and Duke Ihenacho for starting duty in 2016.
