Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) is out for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. QB T.J. Yates draws the start but isn’t a fantasy option in the nightmare matchup.

Texans HC Bill O'Brien expects QB T.J. Yates to start Sunday's game against the Jaguars. QB Tom Savage is in the protocol after suffering a scary-looking concussion in the loss to the 49ers. Yates played well in relief, completing 14 of 26 passes for 175 yards and 2 TDs. But he won't be a fantasy option vs. Jacksonville.

Texans QB Tom Savage was knocked out of Sunday's game against the 49ers with a 2nd-quarter concussion. He took a huge hit and was clearly woozy -- but Savage was allowed to play another series before eventually heading to the locker room for a concussion test. QB T.J. Yates will finish out this game for Houston.

Texans HC Bill O'Brien did not name a starting QB for Thursday night's game against the Bengals after Tuesday's practice. He told the media that he's "still evaluating a lot of things," according to NFL Network's James Palmer, and that it might be a game-time decision between Deshaun Watson and Tom Savage. We're still expecting it to be Watson, but neither guy is a Week 2 fantasy option.

Texans QB Tom Savage was benched at halftime of Sunday's opener against the Jaguars. He completed 7 of 13 passes for 62 yards, 0 TDs and 0 INTs in the first 30 minutes -- and had a sack-fumble returned for a TD. Houston was trailing 19-0. Rookie QB Deshaun Watson has entered the game and can lay claim to the starting job with a solid 2nd-half showing.

Texans HC Bill O'Brien reiterated on Tuesday that Tom Savage is his team's starting QB. That's been the company line all offseason. Savage has been solid through 2 preseason games, completing 85% of his passes, averaging 8.4 yards per attempt and tossing 1 TD with 0 INTs. Deshaun Watson has connected on just 51.4% of his passes with 0 TDs. But he's run for 34 yards and 2 scores. We'll buy Savage as Houston's early-season starter but still expect the rookie to make more starts this year.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson completed 15 of 25 pass attempts (60%) for 179 yards, 0 TDs and 0 INTs in his preseason debut against the Panthers on Wednesday night. The rookie also flashed his rushing ability, namely with a 15-yard TD scamper in the 3rd quarter. He finished with 24 yards on 3 carries. "He's a smart player," HC Bill O'Brien said afterward. "He's an instinctive player. First game out there, I thought he did some good things. It's a big jump from college to the NFL. I thought he handled it pretty well." QB Tom Savage got the start on Wednesday night and completed 9 of 11 passes for 69 yards. He remains atop the depth chart for now, but it's only a matter of time before Watson gets the keys to the offense. He's worth a look late in best-ball and 2-QB drafts.

Tom Savage is "clearly #1" in the Texans' QB derby, according to John McClain. Rookie QB DeShaun Watson has reportedly impressed, but Savage has been "terrific" so far, McClain writes. "Makes every throw, respected by teammates, knows this offense." We'll buy the veteran as Houston's Week 1 starter, but our money is still on the rookie making more starts this season. Neither guy is worth rostering outside of 2-QB leagues.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, there won't be a true competition for the Texans' starting QB spot this summer. The job will reportedly belong to Tom Savage until/unless he gets hurt or proves that he doesn't deserve it. That falls in line with what the team has said since drafting QB Deshaun Watson. Of course, there's always the chance that Watson simply outperforms expectations, picks up the offense quicker than anticipated and leaves no doubt that he's the team's best option under center. We'll see how things shake out come training camp. In the meantime, neither Watson nor Savage looks particularly attractive as a redraft fantasy football option for 2017.

Texans HC Bill O’Brien threw cold water on the notion that QB Deshaun Watson would start Week 1. "As a rookie quarterback it's a big jump," O'Brien said. “Tom [Savage] is our starter and Deshaun will come in and he's going to work hard and we're going to teach him and feed him a lot of information. And he'll work at it.” GM Rick Smith added: "I don't know if people believe us but we're comfortable with Tom Savage as our quarterback.” Ultimately, we think Watson could push for the starting gig with a strong summer. While he’s transitioning from a spread offense, the Clemson product enters the NFL with 35 college starts.

The Texans made a move up from #25 to #12 to grab Clemson QB Deshaun Watson. Watson led his Tigers to 28 wins over the past 2 seasons, including a National Championship this past year. He was especially impressive in big games, racking up 825 yards and 7 scores through the air — plus another 116 and a TD on the ground — in the past 2 title games. Watson finished his college career with a strong 67.4% completion rate and 90 TDs. He added 1,934 rushing yards and 26 scores. The concerns: he tossed 30 INTs over the past 2 years, showing questionable decision-making and inconsistent accuracy. There are arm-strength worries after he was clocked with a ball speed of 49 mph at the Combine. (55+ is considered ideal.) And he has a significant adjustment to make coming from Clemson’s spread offense. Still, the most experienced QB in this class has an excellent shot to win the Week 1 starting job. His “competition” will be Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden. Watson will also be working with a young trio of WRs in DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and Braxton Miller. This is a nice landing spot.

Texans QB Brock Osweiler will start Saturday's playoff opener against the Raiders, HC Bill O'Brien announced on Tuesday. QB Tom Savage (concussion) is iffy to be cleared in time. And even if he was, he'd miss most or all of this week of practice. So Houston goes back to Osweiler, who finished the regular season with a 59% completion rate, 5.8 yards per attempt, 15 TDs and 16 INTs. He fared OK vs. Oakland back in Week 11, going 26 of 39 for 243 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

Texans QB Tom Savage left in the 1st half of Sunday's game against the Titans to be checked for a concussion. He returned to take a knee at the end of the half, but QB Brock Osweiler was back out there to start the 3rd quarter. We'll update this situation when we learn more.

Update: Savage was reportedly reevaluated for a concussion at halftime and then ruled out.

The Texans are expected to start QB Tom Savage against the Bengals on Saturday night, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Savage stepped in for the benched Brock Osweiler in the 2nd quarter of yesterday's game and led the Texans back from a 13-0 deficit for a 21-20 win. Savage completed 23 of 36 passes for 260 yards with 0 TDs or INTs. His 85.4 QB Rating was better than Osweiler has posted in all but 3 games this season. Savage will be no better than a low-end QB2 for Week 16, but he looks like good news for WR DeAndre Hopkins. Savage targeted Hopkins on 15 of his 36 attempts (42%) yesterday, completing 8 for 87 yards.

The Texans have dealt QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Jets in exchange for a late-round conditional pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.  Houston will move forward with Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer and Tom Savage at QB.  Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, will battle Geno Smith (and possibly a rookie) for the Jets' starting job.  The winner will have sneaky fantasy upside in OC Chan Gailey's spread offense and with WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Insider Dianna Marie Russini hears that QB Brian Hoyer will sign with the Texans.  He'll be reuniting with HC Bill O'Brien, who was Hoyer's QBs coach and OC from 2009-2011.  Houston will have Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage under contract.  They're also reportedly close to re-signing Ryan Mallett.  The group will stage a competition for the starting job this summer, but the winner won't be more than a low-end QB2 in a run-first offense.

Texans QB Tom Savage (knee) is out for this weekend's game against the Ravens.  Still no word on the severity of his injury of if he'll be available for Week 17.  With QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick (leg) and Ryan Mallett (pectoral) out for the season, Houston is left with Case Keenum and Thad Lewis at QB.  Expect a Week 16 starter to be announced by Wednesday, but neither guy is a fantasy option.  The Ravens defense is a strong play.

Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is done for the season with a broken leg suffered in Sunday's game against the Colts. He was replaced by QB Tom Savage, who injured his knee near the end of the contest. He’s scheduled for an MRI on Monday. If Savage can’t play next week, Houston would be left with QB Thad Lewis. Regardless of which guy is under center, it's a concern for WRs DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson. Expect tons of RB Arian Foster against the Ravens and Jaguars.

Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a lower left leg injury in the 2nd quarter of Sunday's game against the Colts.  He was carted off the field, so his day is almost certainly over.  QB Tom Savage is in the game for Houston.
