QB Tony Romo is stepping away from football to pursue a job in broadcasting, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Health was the deciding factor for the soon-to-be 37-year-old, who's suffered a multitude of injuries, most notably to his back. Of course, there's nothing permanent about this decision. Romo could still get the itch to return to the game as we get closer to Week 1. But for now, his 14-year career ends with 34,183 passing yards and 248 TDs. Both marks rank among the top 30 in NFL history.

The Cowboys will release QB Tony Romo on Thursday, according to ESPN. Dallas has been trying to work out a trade but had no leverage. So Romo will get to choose his new team. The Broncos and Texans have seemingly emerged as the front-runners. Both squads would give Romo a shot to at least be a fantasy football spot starter.

The Cowboys have decided to get QB Tony Romo some action in Sunday's finale against the Eagles, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It'll be his 1st regular season appearance since Thanksgiving 2015. QBs Dak Prescott and Mark Sanchez are also expected to play vs. Philly, per Schefter, but the exact rotation remains unclear. It's obviously a situation to avoid in Week 17 fantasy lineups

The Cowboys don't plan on playing QB Tony Romo in Sunday's finale vs. the Eagles. "We don’t feel like we can gain anything from him running a few plays," owner Jerry Jones said. "Not worth the risk.” It's still unclear whether QB Dak Prescott will play the entire game or if Dallas will use 3rd QB Mark Sanchez.

In his 1st statement since injuring his back, Cowboys QB Tony Romo admitted that Dak Prescott is and should remain the team's starter going forward. Prescott "has earned the right to be our QB," Romo said in a heartfelt statement. (You can watch it here, and we'd recommend it.) So that's that. Romo did make it clear that he'd like to continue his football career. That won't happen in Dallas, though. He'll be 37 when the 2017 season kicks off.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed after Sunday's win in Pittsburgh that QB Dak Prescott will remain the starter going forward, despite QB Tony Romo (back) being cleared to play. "We're going to let this decision in this case make itself," Jones said. "Dak's got a hot hand and we're going to go with it." The rookie turned in another brilliant performance on Sunday, completing 22 of 32 passes for 319 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. He's up to 14 TDs vs. 2 INTs on the year and has tossed multiple TDs in 4 straight.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) has been medically cleared, according to ESPN's Ed Werder. When Romo gets back on the field "has moved from medical decision to coaching decision," Werder adds. The Cowboys, of course, have seemingly been distancing themselves from Romo as their starting QB over the past few weeks. Dak Prescott is simply playing too well for Dallas to send him to the bench. Expect the rookie to remain under center as long as he maintains his current form.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that it'd be a "big stretch" for Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) to be ready for Sunday's game against the Steelers. Romo is still focusing on "conditioning & change-of-direction," per Rapoport, and "may not even practice fully this week." Dallas, of course, has no reason to rush Romo with QB Dak Prescott continuing his excellent play. Look for the rookie to start vs. the Steelers this weekend.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he doesn't know when QB Tony Romo (back) will be ready to return. "I do think that unquestionably he's going to be ready to go at some point near the end of the year. We'll be able to evaluate things at that time," Jones said. He then went on to talk about the danger of disrupting team chemistry. It's the clearest indication yet that Dallas will ride with QB Dak Prescott as long as the rookie is winning games. Prescott shouldn't have much trouble doing that this weekend vs. the Browns. At the Steelers in Week 10 will be a tougher test.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will start against the Browns in Week 9, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. We already know that the rookie is starting this Sunday night's game against the Eagles, but QB Tony Romo (back) was thought to have a chance to return for Week 9. That won't happen. Dallas is clearly taking it slowly with the 36-year-old, which is easy to do with Prescott playing so well.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) was listed as limited in Thursday's practice, his 1st official practice of the season. He won't play against the Eagles on Sunday night but is clearly trending in the right direction. We'll see if he's cleared in time for Week 9 -- and then if Dallas starts him over Dak Prescott.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) did not officially participate in Wednesday's practice, but he was on the field. He "threw passes during the pat-and-go warmup, took some turns in individual drills and threw passes in routes in air," according to ESPN's Todd Archer. Romo won't play against the Eagles this weekend but has a chance to be cleared for Week 9. Whether Dallas will bench QB Dak Prescott for Romo remains uncertain.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms that Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) won't play against the Eagles next week and adds that he "may not be ready to be considered" for Week 9 against the Browns. Romo's return target is getting pushed further and further back -- whether that's because of his health, Dak Prescott's impressive play or a combination of both. Prescott will remain a viable fantasy starter for as long as he's under center.

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones suggested Monday that QB Tony Romo (back) won't be ready when the team comes out of its Week 7 bye. "It would have been a hard push to get him ready for that Eagles game," Jones said. So QB Dak Prescott will get at least 1 more start at home for the Eagles in Week 8. And there's still no guarantee that Dallas turns back to Romo after that. Prescott currently ranks among the top 4 QBs in completion rate (68.7%), yards per attempt (8.2) and TD-to-INT ratio (7:1).

ESPN's Adam Schefter said in a Wednesday radio appearance that Cowboys QB Tony Romo isn't a lock to get the starting job back when he's medically cleared. "As much as Tony Romo has meant to that team and as good as he has been, I think he's lost control of the starting job, to no fault of his own," Schefter said. "Dak Prescott is seven passes, seven passes short of tying Tom Brady's record for most passes to start a career without an interception and they're winning games. So you're going to take a guy that has impressed the locker room, that is winning games, that is not making mistakes, is growing and developing ... You're going to take that guy and bench him? Good luck with that." Dallas is sitting at 4-1 but has tough draws against the Packers and Eagles sandwiching a Week 7 bye. How Prescott and the team performs in those games might ultimately determine who's under center for the Cowboys the rest of the way.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo got good feedback on his injured back when he went for an MRI on Monday, according to NFL Network's Jane Slater. "Healing well and on track," Slater adds. Romo is eying a return after Dallas' Week 7 bye. Owner Jerry Jones has consistently said that Romo remains his team's starter, regardless of how well QB Dak Prescott plays.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that the Cowboys are targeting a Week 8 return for QB Tony Romo (back). Dallas' bye is Week 7. Romo is about 5-and-a-half weeks removed from the injury and is expected to "ramp up conditioning and throwing" this week, per Rapoport. The Cowboys have plus matchups against the Browns, Steelers, Redskins, Bucs and Lions over the 2nd half of the season, so a healthy Romo would have spot-start appeal.

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that "everything is looking great" in QB Tony Romo's recovery from his August back injury. Romo threw some passes in warm-ups before the Week 2 game at Washington, though the team has yet to give an expected return date. The Oct. 30 meeting with Philadelphia -- which follows the Cowboys' bye -- might be a realistic target. We'll certainly keep an eye for any updates on Romo's status and return. In the meantime, Dak Prescott remains a relevant fantasy QB -- especially in a positive Week 3 home matchup with the Bears.
