What You Need to Know:

  • Robinson spent 4 years stuck behind NFL runners at Alabama. His first 2 years found Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs and Najee Harris all ahead of him. The next 2 still found Najee Harris dominating backfield work.
  • In 2021, it was finally Robinson’s turn. He delivered 1,343 yards and 14 TDs on 271 carries, adding 35-296-2 receiving. Robinson handled 61.9% of Alabama’s RB carries and 62.5% of the RB receptions. He also scored 66.7% of the team’s rushing TDs.
  • Robinson delivered an 85th-percentile speed score with his 4.53-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine, checking in at 6’2 and 224 pounds.
  • Washington selected Robinson in Round 3 of the draft, the same round in which the team drafted Antonio Gibson 2 years earlier. He was the 6th RB off the board.
  • “He’s going to add very nicely to what we have with Antonio Gibson in terms of a one-two punch,” Rivera told the team website in early May. “A lot of success that I’ve been around, a lot of success that I’ve had as a head coach, was a lot to do with having a quality one-two punch.”
  • Rivera has specifically referenced the DeAngelo Williams-Jonathan Stewart combo that accompanied his first 4 years in Carolina. Those backfields saw the following carry counts:
    • 2011: Williams 155, Stewart 142
    • 2012: Williams 173, Stewart 93 (in 9 games)
    • 2013: Williams 201, Stewart + Mike Tolbert 149 (Stewart missed 10 games)
    • 2014: Stewart 175, Williams + Tolbert 99 (in 14 combined games)
  • Rivera also encountered the Ryan Mathews-Mike Tolbert combo in his final season on the Chargers staff, before getting the Panthers job. And he was on the 2006 Bears’ staff when the team went 13-3 and reached the Super Bowl with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson combining for 453 carries.
  • Gibson racked up the 7th-most carries and 8th-most total opportunities (carries + targets) among NFL RBs over the past 2 seasons. He also dealt with lower-body injuries in each season.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Robinson steps into a committee that presents immediate opportunity but also caps his upside. Antonio Gibson has played well and seen high opportunity volume over his 1st 2 seasons. But it’s pretty clear that Washington wants to limit his exposure a bit more going forward. As long as Robinson gets into the double-digit rounds of 2022 redraft leagues, he’ll be a fine stash. The draft capital spent and situation he lands in make him a solid dynasty option.

Carson Wentz, QB WAS

Commanders fire Turner

The Commanders fired OC Scott Turner. Washington never ranked better than 20th in total yards or 23rd in points across Turner's 3 seasons, although QB play was seemingly a bigger problem than Turner's play calling. We'll see who the Commanders tab as their next OC -- and what they do at QB. Carson Wentz is set to count $26 million against the 2023 cap but can be cut with no dead-cap penalty.

Commanders RB Brian Robinson (knee) has been ruled out for Week 18 vs. the Cowboys. RBs Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson figure to carry the workload on Sunday. The Cowboys' defense rank as the 4th-toughest matchup for opposing RBs in adjusted fantasy points allowed this season. It would've been tough to trust Robinson or Antonio Gibson, who underwent foot surgery on Thursday, in this game for fantasy purposes. We feel even more skittish about the backups. Neither Williams nor Patterson is anything more than speculative RB3/flex consideration.

Commanders RB Brian Robinson (knee) didn't practice on Thursday. It's not looking good for the rookie at this point, but Friday will give him a chance to participate in a limited fashion perhaps. RB Antonio Gibson was placed on IR already, and the team elevated RB Jaret Patterson from the practice squad in a corresponding move. This messy situation doesn't bode well for any fantasy manager trying to decipher this situation for Week 18 vs. the Cowboys. Check in tomorrow once we have a more concrete idea of what to expect from the Commanders' backfield.

As a rookie, Robinson overcame an August shooting to lead the Commanders in rushing. Truly amazing. While he showed little as a pass-catcher, we doubt Washington will pour resources into the backfield this offseason. The 24-year-old (in March) will hopefully get a QB upgrade in the spring.
