Niners Add Demarcus Robinson and It Doesn't Make Sense

The 49ers have agreed to a two-year deal with WR Demarcus Robinson. It'll pay $9.5 million total, with $6 million of that guaranteed. Robinson spent the past two years with the Rams, averaging 1.7 receptions and 26.5 yards per game.

First off, I know that's not enough money for the Robinson signing to actually matter. He could completely bomb and not alter anything they plan to do over the next two years.

But this offseason has opened with the 49ers unloading Deebo Samuel and shedding plenty of other veterans who have been more productive than Robinson.

They're currently left with Brandon Aiyuk (ACL tear), Jauan Jennings, and second-year man Ricky Pearsall as the expected top three at WR.

So why throw a two-year contract at a 30-year-old (31 in September) who has averaged just 29 receptions per season for his career?

It'd be different if they signed Robinson to a one-year deal in July or August -- realizing that Aiyuk might need a little more time to open the year, or to fill in for another injured guy.

This timing, though, makes me wonder what the plan is. Of course, we'll have to wait on the answer.

In the meantime, don't bother drafting Robinson in any format. We'll see whether he winds up being insurance behind the rumored Aiyuk trade thoughts.
