2028 Superflex Rookie Picks Could Be a Worthwhile Gamble
Dynasty managers are treating 2027 rookie picks like gold … so why not look at 2028? It may not be as talent-rich as 2027, but the top QBs have shown potential to be superflex difference makers. There are also top WRs and RBs who could turn into future NFL superstars.
If 2028 firsts come much cheaper than 2027 firsts, rebuilding teams might want to scoop up an extra one.
Just remember: College football changes quickly, and injuries, transfers, and breakout seasons can all shift the dynasty landscape.

Sagapolutele Closed Freshman Season Like the Top Prospect
Cal QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was a four-star recruit in 2025 who initially committed and enrolled at Oregon. He left after 32 days at Oregon, feeling like he had no path to playing time. That brought Sagapolutele to Cal where he would start and succeed as a true freshman.
Sagapolutele threw for 3,454 yards with 18 TDs and 9 INTs. He closed strong, topping 320 yards in three of his final four games without an interception in any of them.
There is still room for improvement, especially in terms of consistency when reading the defense pre- and post-snap, but Sagapolutele has the potential to top the 2028 NFL Draft.
Russell Untested; Underwood Unfinished
It’s difficult to assess this QB group when even the most experienced options have just one year as starters. That also leaves room for the class to improve, both players already on this list and 2027-eligible prospects who return to school.
Alabama’s Keelon Russell sat behind Ty Simpson last season, throwing only 15 passes the entire year. The 6'3, 194-pound dual-threat QB was a five-star prospect with superstar college potential. Talented Alabama QBs typically turn into high NFL draft picks. (Recent examples include Simpson, Bryce Young, and Mac Jones.).
Michigan’s Bryce Underwood had a disappointing freshman season, throwing for 2,428 yards with 11 TDs and 9 INTs as the starter. He certainly didn’t showcase NFL accuracy or decision-making. But the 6’4, 228-pound QB oozes fantasy potential.
Underwood ran for 392 yards and 6 TDs last season as a big-bodied QB who could take off and scramble when there was space. The Wolverines dialed up designed runs more frequently late in the season to utilize his athleticism. He could become an NFL prospect if his passing improves. He also could flame out if it doesn’t.
BYU's QB Is Better Than the Buzz
BYU’s Bear Bachmeier had a strong first season, throwing for 3,033 yards with 15 TDs and 7 INTs. His arm strength is underwhelming, but he improved his reads and progressions as the year went on and finished with 7 TDs and no INTs over his final four games.
Ohio State’s Tavien St. Clair and Pitt’s Mason Heintschel could also emerge this season, despite limited starting experience. Both have NFL tools but have not had a full opportunity to showcase them.
