"Hope And Expectation" For Justin Herbert To Be Ready For Week 1

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler writes that the Chargers' "hope and expectation" remains that QB Justin Herbert (foot) will be ready for Week 1. "I would describe the Chargers' feeling on Herbert as concern but not panic," Fowler adds.

        What They're Saying

More Fowler on Herbert: "Here's the situation with Herbert, who's nursing plantar fascia: He will spend two weeks in a walking boot, and then the Chargers will reassess. The sense here is if he needs a bit more time in the boot, the Chargers will give it to him. Though they want him in August, they need him in September. If pain tolerance is an issue -- which is normal for this injury -- then Herbert has shown a penchant for playing through pain, including broken ribs in 2022."

It sounds like Herbert is still on the timeline that the Chargers set for him when they first announced this injury. But Fowler's words make it sound like Herbert isn't quite a lock to be ready for the start of the season. Plantar fasciitis can be a tricky injury that's prone to aggravation.

We'll continue to keep a close eye on Herbert's progress over the next few weeks. The Chargers offense -- under new HC Jim Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman -- has reportedly struggled without Herbert over the past week.
