Patriots QB Drake Maye is focusing more on keeping his eyes downfield and relying less on scrambling during training camp, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss: “Maye rushed for 421 yards on 54 carries last season, a robust 7.8 average per carry. But notably, he shared that one of his top goals this season is to potentially not run as much – or at least do so as a last resort.”
Maye: Remaining a passer longer when I scramble, I think that’s big. I feel like I had times last year where I had some guys deep that I may have missed them or took off running instead.”
Maye’s mobility was a key component of his fantasy success last season. From Week 6 on, he averaged 37.2 rushing yards and just over 17 fantasy points per game. However, the majority of his rushing production came from scrambling. Mae saw just four designed rushes all season long, while his 10.8% scramble rate was the second-highest mark in the NFL.
Even if – or when – the scramble rate falls, the uptick in designed runs should make up for it. Last year’s OC Alex Van Pelt dialed back the designed runs in an attempt to keep Maye healthy. But with Josh McDaniels taking over the offense, expect more manufactured rushes for Maye.
