The Jets are placing the franchise tag on RB Breece Hall. The move doesn't really come as a surprise. Speculation for weeks has centered on the team using either the franchise or transition tag to keep Hall around. But the details here still look noteworthy. The tag guarantees a $14.293 million one-year deal (once the player signs) if there's no long-term deal by mid-July.
What They're Saying
ESPN's Adam Schefter: "The two sides were unable to come to a long-term agreement at this time. Enter the franchise tag."
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero: "While there was speculation the Jets could use the transition tag on Breece Hall, the franchise tag is less than $3 million more and assures he'll stay in New York."
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
That last part is key here.
The modest monetary difference between the tenders makes it sensible to step up to the more restrictive option. And going franchise over transition points to the Jets legitimately wanting to keep Hall around.
Sure, it's still possible to trade Hall. But the Jets reportedly turned down offers of a fourth-round pick at last season's trade deadline. Hall seems like the caliber of player who could have returned third-round compensatory value had he left via free agency. So why would another team now pay at least an earlier third-rounder (and probably more) now if none was willing to do so in season?
The other significant detail here: They've apparently talked long-term deal but made no meaningful progress.
Hall spent just about all of 2025 looking fed up with the franchise and ready to leave. And no quotes from the Jets' coaching staff seemed to come with heart emojis attached.
My guess: This situation ends in either the Jets paying way too much for a RB amid a roster in shambles ... or Hall playing out the year on the tag and then leaving next year instead.
To me, at least, this seems an odd place for the Jets to take a stand (rather than simply let him go). And staying with the Jets necessarily limits Hall's fantasy upside vs. plenty of other potential landing spots.
He sits 16th in our PPR RB rankings right now. We'll see whether the Jets can do anything to enhance that outlook.
Dynasty Impact
To be determined.
A longer-term deal with the Jets would be a negative. Sure, situations can change quickliy in the NFL. But the history of this franchise's leadership doesn't curry favor.
Other Winners & Losers
Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis could have carried sneaky best-ball upside this draft season if the Jets let Hall walk. Instead, they'll remain no more than fantasy handcuffs.
