It was clear the Chiefs had big plans for RB Kenneth Walker when they signed him to a 3-year, $43 million deal earlier this offseason. But that plan might be even bigger than we initially thought. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports from Chiefs camp that Walker will get the "majority" of the carries and can "do everything," including playing a big role in the passing game.
What They're Saying: A Three-Down Plan
Fowler: "The Chiefs have plans to give running back Kenneth Walker III the majority of their carries. They signed him for a reason, and they believe he gives Reid something he hasn't had in a very long time -- a running back who can do everything they need. They like him as a blocker, pass catcher and between-the-tackles runner. They're running more under-center plays with Mahomes, as they think that's the best way to maximize what Walker does best."
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Scheme Shift Favors Walker
The under-center note is especially interesting. That's something QB Patrick Mahomes has done very little of. Last year, for example, only 6.6% of his dropbacks came from under center.
Walker, meanwhile, was more efficient running with his QB under center in Seattle last year. He averaged 4.79 yards per carry on those plays vs. 4.14 with his QB in shotgun or pistol.
The Chiefs appear willing to tweak their offense to maximize Walker's skill set.
The pass-catching note is also noteworthy. With WR Rashee Rice's tumultuous offseason and TE Travis Kelce another year older, there are certainly targets available in Kansas City. Walker has averaged a modest 33.3 catches per season as a pro but could handily beat that mark this season.
He looks like an easy top-12 fantasy RB this year with upside into the top 6.
