Kenneth Gainwell Headshot

Gainwell ran 25 times for 140 yards, finishing as the RB14. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry with a long of 28, but he didn’t score and didn’t catch his only target. This was by far his biggest workload of the season. He got there despite a hip injury that kept him out of practice Wednesday before he was upgraded to full Friday.

Gainwell matched Bucky Irving with 30 snaps. He took all 8 third-down snaps, 4 of 7 short-yardage snaps and 18 early-down snaps. Sean Tucker was active and healthy but didn’t take an offensive snap. That shows how far Gainwell sits ahead of him, or that Tampa Bay wanted to showcase Gainwell amid trade rumors. With the run game working this well, a trade looks less likely.

Gainwell ran 14 times for 88 yards as the RB31 in Week 7. In Week 6 against his former team, he got just 2 carries for 17 yards and a 7-yard catch. His usual role is third downs and the two-minute drill, which barely existed in this game.

Chicago allows the sixth-fewest fantasy points to RBs in Week 9 but ranked 27th in run defense power heading into Week 8. Detroit allows the 10th-fewest after the Week 10 bye. Gainwell is an RB4 and Irving handcuff in normal conditions.
