Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs said he's being split out wide "way more" under new OC John Morton. Gibbs added that Morton wants him "more involved" in the passing game.
Gibbs: "I gotta learn the formations for being split out. I'm being split out like way more than I was the past two years. That's good. That's going to be fun. I've been waiting on that."
Gibbs was split out wide or in the slot for 19.6% of his passing snaps over the last two seasons, a high number for a RB. His 104 catches and 833 receiving yards over that span are both top-6 marks among RBs.
It's worth noting that Gibbs has averaged significantly more yards per route from the backfield than split out, although we're looking at relatively small samples there. We certainly wouldn't consider more time out wide or in the slot bad news for Gibbs' fantasy value, especially if it means more snaps overall. We'll see how often Morton plans on getting Gibbs and RB David Montgomery on the field together.
We're still shying away from Gibbs at his top-5 ADP due to workload concerns. But there's no doubt that he has the upside to pay off that price if Morton tilts more of the backfield work in Gibbs' favor. We'll keep a close eye on the situation in training camp and preseason action.
